I can't add to the very good advice already given, I just want to say how lucky your son and his partner are to have you caring and looking out for them. I do hope they can get sorted so you can stop worrying and get a decent night's sleep !

Thankyou lets just hope they learn from this wish they could grow up quicker in the head some of these young ones have a lot to learn,although i have always said an old saying that my nan used to say "neither a borrower nor a lender be". Withholding the rent, even if it was a sensible or a legal thing to do, and it wasn't, is not the same as misappropriating the money. What did they would happen? That the landlord would write it off? The money should have been set aside to be paid to the landlord later but that obviously proved to be too tempting.
Don't have them move in with you, they are going to cause you no end of future problems if they are that foolish and irresponsible. And they have kids, too. They need some very serious money-management guidance and quickly or they will continue to be a danger to themselves and their children.0
