Whats Singapore Really Like????

A family member is moving to singapore for 3 years in the summer, what is it really like out there?

They have asked us to go and visit them for a 2 week holiday once a year, but all the reviews i have read dont paint a very exciting picture of the place!!

I know its one of the cleanest, safest places on the planet, but there doesnt sound like there is much to see and do out there for 2 weeks. And also some of the reviews i have read have said how expensive it is!!!

So tell me what the real singapore is like and also how expensive, places to see and things to do etc....

  • In a word,dull.
  • I've probably been there a dozen times and use it for a stopover on my way to and from Aus. It's a great place to spend a couple of days but not a couple of weeks!!!!!

    • Top airport
    • Botanical gardens worth a visit
    • Ride on a bum boat
    • visit the various ethnic enclaves
    • etc
but most amazing of all Shopping Unlimited
a street full of shopping malls - all with air con
each as big as one in the UK

I think a fortnight may be the max you (and your credit card) could stand!

    One word: Sterile.

Two weeks? No thanks. 4 days, then get your family to accompany you to Indonesia or Malaysia, and you're all happy.
  • The girls I met there were very nice, other than that pretty boring... a couple of days and you've pretty much seen and done everything.

Two weeks would be too much in my view, it is nice, but it is also tiny and a little like an Oriental Stepford...
if it's more than 10 stone, and that hairy, it's probably not a dog...it may be a wookie.

o/half parents work / live there so we go quite regulary.

It a nutshell it is a bit dull but not a bad place to go if you are new to SE Asia.

3-4 days great couple of tips

    1. tea bean and coffee leaf make great iced coffee (yes I would fly 6000 miles for one!)
    2. The zoo is open at night time and is great
    3. Newton cricus for food is good

But most of all Thailand is just over an hour away so why not fly to Samuai for a few days (direct flights with Bangkok air now).

    HAve a good time

Yes, I would base yourself there, but have a few days away here and there since the budget airlines within Asia are great.

The Zoo is the best I have ever seen and there is a neighbouring night safari which is great aswell.

You will be guaranteed warm weather and good food (not particularly expensive)

But since you are visiting family out there, you will be spending a lot of time catching up by eating and drinking ?!? A local (your family) will have sussed out lots for you to do I am sure

  • I went for 10 days and didn't feel it was too long.
The only thing I found expensive was alcohol.

is there any bargains to be had in singapore? if so what should we be looking out for?

we are just worried that we are going to need so much money out there, but can someone give me what sort of things we can get great bargains on and what things we should avoid as they are very expensive.

also what is the food like? little miss divadee is quite fussy and we are worried she wont be able to eat anything out there, she loves her english food!!! like roast dinner, cassarole etc....
