Discount for certain job types from mobile networks?

I was in the Orange shop today looking at potential replacements when my contract is up with Virgin in July. He asked who I was employed by and my OH and said that as he is employed by Network Rail he would be entitled to a 20% discount if he took out the contract for me. Can anyone confirm this please and do any of the other networks offer a similar deal?

Sounds like BS. If you told him your worked as a banker, he would still been offering you 20% discount to get a sale.

Yes, wondered that myself which is why I'm asking. I won't be paying the Orange price as against internet prices though unless it's a really good deal.

not necessarily BS, my mother works for capita and gets 20% vodafone discount, your OH would have to check with his employer about which staff benefits he receives.

Agreed, through my employer I can get 20% but in store monthly contracts only. All I have to do is take my latest payslip.

Networks do offer employees of specific companies discounts off their tariffs.
In Orange's case it's called "Orange Perks".
You/husband will be required to present a current payslip for the discount to be applied.
Vodafone's scheme is called "Advantage". The company I work for has their corporate contract with VF, and in return they offer a general employee discount off new contracts of 20%.

Thanks everyone - it seems that I may have been suspicious for no good reason after all. It'll be worth me checking this with all the relevant companies when I'm after a new contract.

HMRC employees are entitled to 20% discounts on "certain tarrifs" with Orange allegedly.

Some companies do have discounts with certain mobile operators, if you contact your HR department they should let you know of any company perks. In the past few jobs I've had we could either flick through the handbook or go online and log on to the companies staff website.
