Best to compare a few different speed sites as they can vary quite a lot.

Virgin (non-cable) has, in some parts of the country, been very slow for the las few weeks - 34kbps for me ie Virgin on the ridiculous. Worst affected are those customers on a supposedly high speed ie over 2Mbps connection. Virgin has finally begun to acknowledge, albeit semi-officially, that there is a problem with non cable ADSL but they are continuing to advertise for new subscribers.
FWIW I, and others, have noticed an improvement during the last week or so (149kbps as I type) and Virgin reckon that new pipes should be in place by mid March and more are due in April. It remains to be seen whether the new circuits will be overwhelmed by the influx of new customers so lured by Virgin's "we have no download limits" that they fail to notice the small print: "fair usage applies" :eek:0 -
I'm on NTL/Virgin cable broadband.
I was on 4Mb/ service & in evenings I was getting 300-600Kb/s.
It was slow & intermittent.
I had 4 engineer visits & they said they couldn't do anything as there was Congestion in my area. There are too many people using broadband at peak times.
There are a lot of students in my area & they hammer the network so it grinds to a halt in evenings.
These companies have taken on too many customers & cannot maintain good service.
My broadband was more reliable few years ago.

I am on SKY Max and my speed is 6Mb a lot slower than they advertise. My connection is poor and keeps stopping and the only way to clear it is by using the reset button on the Sky Box. The engineer came to connect it but left when he couldn't and I was told I had to do it myself. I am not at all impressed with Sky!To Dare is To Do:beer:0

Hi Wearside, in fairness to Sky all services state 'Up to a given speed' as this is dependent on conditions outside therir control, line attenuation, noise, internal wiring etc.
If you have a look at the link below you may be able to improve things yourself.
