A Bargain??!! VW Polo

I just need advice on buying a car...it my first car :D

My friend said she would sell me her car as she wants to get rid of it.

It's a VW Polo, 06 Reg (new shape), 40, 000 mileage, metallic black, 3 door, 1.2 petrol etc etc. She bought it brand new so I'll be the second driver.

She said its worth £3,100 but will sell it to me for £2,700.

I've checked Autotrader and with that spec., you are looking at least £4k.

Do you think I should buy it?

have a look at how much the insurance is going to be (go on the price comparison wesbites and put the registration in but be sure to say you haven't bought it yet)... that would influence my decision.

We are very pleased with an 04 Polo bought 12 months ago at similar miles from people in our village who had owned it from new. (Paid £2000). Bought for my daughter who is 17 and after passing her test we pay £1000 insurance. Knowing the car's previous history is good!

Would your friendship last if it breaks down the day after you bought it? Would you expect her to pay to get it fixed? Plus, why does she want to get rid of it?

Experience has taught me not to buy from or sell to friends or relatives - if something goes wrong, it is very hard to treat it as a pure business transaction, and the friendship can easily be affected.

is it the 3 cylinder engine?
if it is you will want to have proof that engine oil has been changed often backed up with documented proof

First of all, it is not the new shape ( new shape started 2009).
There are many models of car you describe. However, I would say it is a good buy. Trade price is about £3k. Buying a one owner from someone you know and trust is just about the best used buy you can make.

No it isn't ;) As said above, if the engine blows up the day after, who would the OP expect to pay for it? If its from a stranger, sure you'll probably have to foot the bill unless you can prove otherwise in court, but here you not only risk cash, but also friendship.

As a rule, I'd never buy a car from a friend or family member, unless it was a £200 banger bought with the knowledge it could last a week or 10 years.

Edit - if your friend wants to sell, and they're prepared to 'give you' several hundred quid by under selling it anyway, why not sell it for them and split any cash made over £2700? I'm guessing they don't want the hassle hence the cheap sell. Or ask her if she had any issue if you bought the car, then selling it on in a very short amount of time?

Buying a car is always a risk! When I was 17, I sold one to a friend (we had owned the car from new, for 10 years, and thought it good - a Riley 1.5) I respected the car and wouldn't have taken the revs above 3000 rpm. He drove it through the lanes in second gear into the orange and red on the rev counter and blew the engine the same day.

I have never felt guilty because I told him you can't drive like that as he brought me home from delivering the car. His mother complained but it was the way he drove it.

I would always be honest with a buyer .... friend or not and in a private sale would expect common sense. If you are selling to a friend be honest and expect intelligence in return!

Things go wrong ..... but if you are honest and they are, I don't see anything other than the benefit that you know the car has been owned by someone you trust and know it hasn't been wrapped around a tree.

We bought a car last year from a guy we have known for years .... the local policeman and it has had a few problems but i would not even consider that he was hiding anything from me when we bought the car.

PS. Build your considered risk into the price you are prepared to pay!
