It made me realise that I use hardly any stamps now except at Christmas and I think that more and more people will send less seasonal cards than in the past.
I agree there will be a "cull" on the Xmas card list.
Personally I'd rather everyone stopped and sent the money to charity instead, but not everyone agrees with me.
I don't really appreciate the individual cards when you get 50 or 60.

I expect there will be a lot less post generally as people consider the alternatives.
I expect there will also be more hand delivery of Xmas cards.

I have a question that's not been asked yet that I was wondering if anyone knew the answer to:

Will a stamp with '1st' on it be valid for 60 pence towards the cost of posting something more expensive post the price hike? For example, if something should cost £2.95 to post in May, would six 1st class stamps suffice?

If so, I'd personally stock up for posting eBay sales for the rest of the year.

    TIA.

I don't know, but if it does work, 6 2nd-class stamps might be better, since their value is increasing by a bigger percentage.

    £3.00 = 5 x 1st class = 5 x 44p = £2.20 today
    £3.00 = 6 x 2nd class = 6 x 34p = £2.04 today

    Another take :
    1st class old/new = 44/60 = 0.733 ; 0.733 * £3.00 = £2.20
    2nd class old/new = 34/50 = 0.680 ; 0.680 * £3.00 = £2.04

    £3.00 = 5 x 1st class = 5 x 44p = £2.40 today
    £3.00 = 6 x 2nd class = 5 x 34p = £2.24 today
Good point! I shall probably get a mix of the two (might look even weirder covering a parcel in loads of 2nd class stamps!)

Thank you for your input. But the text you are quoting didn't answer my specific question before I asked it, and still doesn't. Could you possibly elaborate?

well what do you want to know?
    what a stamps value is?
if people wouldnt start a multitude of threads on the same subject(there are at least 6 current ones on stamp prices) then the info is easy to find.
A stmp has a value of X. stamps with 1st/2nd are rated at the current postal cost

    Why get nasty?

I made my question very clear. I don't frequent the other forums - I limit them deliberately so I don't lose too much time to the forum. The three I visit take up enough of my time as I tend to get engrossed.

I guess from your last reply that my 'plan' as it were would work, but I'm still not sure. Your first quoted reply didn't answer it, and a couple of dozen full stops certainly didn't.

So many people on here are so clever, that they seem to feel the need to belittle each other to prove their own superiority :(

If my rambling is so incoherent, and your answers so comprehensive, how come Psychic Teabag a) understood what I was asking and b) didn't consider it to have been answered?

Yeah I've done it before, the post office man even helped me work out the best combination of 1st and 2nd class, e.g. for £2.90 it would be four 1st and one 2nd.
