My wife and our two friends booked the Travel Lodge in Preston road Brighton for one nights stay last week, what a dive, we were asked to wait in the bar/lounge because we were early, it was like an old well used transport cafe, very grubby, the ladies toilets were dirty , had a broken seat there was toilet paper and water on the floor, we could only guess what the rooms was like, so off we went not staying even though we had paid up front it was just very poor. Luck Premier Inns had vacancies. The mistake we made is we did not check out trip adviser first.

So you paid up front, and because the bar was grubby and the toilets were dirty you left without even seeing the room

So the communal area was poor but you happily wrote off the money without even seeing the room ? Weird.
  • And trip advisor reviews are not always accurate either.

I stayed at this TL several years ago. When I got up in the morning found no hot water available and the receptionist really couldn't have cared less. told me it would be fixed later as if that was helpful to me. It wasn't so much the lack of hot water more the 'can't be bothered ' attitude.

Never used TL since, Premier are much cleaner, friendlier and I don't pay until I check in and can cancel up to 1300 on the day with no hassle at all.

I wouldn't stay in a TL now if it was free!

I think the OP has a point - the public areas are the showroom of the hotel, and ought to be the best bit! It is not unusual for hotels to have wonderful public areas and hideous rooms (stayed in a few of those in my time), but grim public areas shows someone *really* doesn't care.
  • They're not ALL bad - we've never had a problem with the TL in Didsbury, Manchester. As you'd paid for it I'm not sure why you didn't check out the rooms first though - you're not sleeping in the bar/lounge after all. Though I agree it could reflect the whole hotel.

I've used the newish one in Edinburgh (near Waverley station) a few times and the rooms have always been perfectly good. In fact, I don't think I've been to a grubby Travelodge and I normally stay in 1 or 2 a year on short breaks. I definitely wouldn't rule them out completely, as there are some perfectly decent ones out there.
However I am off to Brighton mid-Sept with my OH so we will definitely think twice before using this one :)

I used to stay with them but I had to give up cos they are really running below the standard. In one occasion I stayed at the one in Warrington near to the motorway. It was a brand new Travelodge so I was offered £20 per night to stay. It was an awful experience. The building is right next to the M60 and a visitor's carpark was built behind the building. It was so noisy that I could not sleep all night at all. I would think this travelodge would have some sort of sound proof as it is located next to the M60, or it should have the carpark built in between the motorway and the building. Anyway that was the last time I stayed at Travelodge. I now stay at Premier Inn instead...

The one on West St isn't too bad. Then again, I only ever used to stay there when there was promotional rates on as it was cheaper than commuting!
