If the sons are both under 21 that will hike the insurance premium considerably to add them as named drivers.

and what difference would it make if they were to be added to the policy after they pass if that is what the OP had intentions in doing? actually it would go UP when the pass insurance wise.

theres no stopping the OP booking the test for one in six weeks time and using the car he would be insured on for the test this would give them 6 weeks in order to find their feet in the new car.

But as the OP has not said at this stage that she intends adding them to her policy when they pass their test your speculation is not of great assistance at this stage.

  • if you read back i was offering that bit of advice, then you mentioned cost and i replied respctively. i have not assumed or speculated.
  • Hello thank you for all your replies. They are actually paying for their own lessons, one is 21 and the other nearly 19 so I don't want them throwing their money down the drain. My elder son has been having lessons on and off for probably three years and my younger son nearly two. That's the reason I want them to stop with this instructor and try an intensive course rather than just going with another instructor who will maybe want to start from scratch with them.

They both feel they are confident in driving, so I just wanted to try and give them a helping hand to get their licences.

I suppose I was just hoping for a recommendation if anyone has had experience with this type of driving practice. We live in Surrey.

I do appreciate all your comments. Thank you. :)

    From post 12:-

"and what difference would it make if they were to be added to the policy after they pass if that is what the OP had intentions in doing?"

    Looks like speculation to me:)

To the original poster, if your sons have been having lessons for that length of time I am surprised they have not taken a test yet, unless they are only having one lesson a month. If they have lots of lessons I would be questioning why they have not been put forward for their test by now.

Another instructor would not start from scratch and they should be able to assess the level they have attained and what work is required.

  • Thanks, they have asked if they can put in for their tests and the instructor has told them both they don't look in their mirrors enough. (One son made a real point of looking in his mirror far more frequently than necessary and was still told it wasn't enough!)

I think the time has come to get a second opinion with another instructor.

Have they both passed their theory tests? Do theory tests run out if they don't pass the practical within specified timescales?

I'd almost be inclined to put in for practical and tell the instructor. Then it is a fail for him if he doesn't get his instructing together. Would be cheapest to have a final push with their current instructor?
