Renewable heat incentive

What do we think the following translates to ?
"Where pre-existing Aga range cookers are in place, for safety reasons we propose that these could remain connected to the boiler but they should be disconnected from the radiators. "
To me that sounds dangerous; don't SF boilers have a tendency to explode if they are isolated ?

Excert from grant application:
To be eligible for payment of the grant the applicant must undertake the following energy efficiency measures where these are appropriate and practical. The installation of these energy efficiency measures will ensure that that the applicant obtains the greatest possible advantage from their renewables system, and reduces their carbon footprint and fuel bills in the most cost effective way.Loft insulation to 270mm where practical.
Cavity wall insulation (where there are cavity walls).
Use low energy light bulbs in all appropriate light fittings.
Install basic controls on your heating system, including controls that ensure your boiler only operates when there is a demand for heat and a programmer or timer for the property as a whole. This only applies where you are not upgrading or changing the controls as part of a renewables heat installation.
I'm gonna guess at the rules being pretty similar for RHI as this grant was available from EST. Just make sure you have as much insulation as is possible for sensible money, spending £30k on the outside of the building cladding stuff will never make enough difference to be cost effective IMHO, but as much loft insulation as you can fit will cost ~£1k and will make a difference.
Ask the company you're thinking of using if they think it will qualify for RHI, if the answer is NO then think again about the system as it may well not be suitable for your property.
Our place has solid stone walls, no under floor or wall insulation but the loft space has ~600mm fibre wool up there. We're also in the same valley and about 7 miles from Altnaharra (google it). We have an ASHP system.
Spoke to EST about this and they were happy we'd qualify for the grant (even though we didn't claim it) so we reckon it'll qualify for RHI also
Maybe a daft question, but extra loft insulation really helps ? Mine is at the regs, but I purchased some before I knew and wasn't sure how much difference it would make.Nice to save.0 -
I have an old gas boiler - 1960's - floor standing. On the plus side, it's technology that never goes wrong, on the other it's dead old and inefficient. The tank needs replacing and the rest of the system needs updating - I've noticed a lot of green-blue mottling around the pipes where they go into the radiators, they're full of gunk as is the tank. Therefore we're thinking of replumbing, moving the boiler out of the kitchen into the loft and having PV installed. I assume I can get the plumber to do all the work up to the installation of the actual panels, then get the panels put in by an MCS professional
I was thinking of getting the kit from navitron - is this a good way to go and will it qualify for RHI?
We have cavity wall insulation, loft insulation, energy saving bulbs and some double glazing.
Any idea of costs? We're a 2.5 person family in a 4 bed house, 7 normal radiators, two double radiators. One of our showers is electric, the other we can't use because the tank is so gunked up we only get enough for one shower and then the water is cold for the rest of the day...
Should point out that I have a roof which is exactly south facing. Though it has a pointless dormer on it we're thinking of removing. The dormer needs to go before we could sensibly have panels up there.Tim0 -
Hi TiredGeek,
Many thanks for the reply re RHI - I have today asked the prospective ASHP installer that very question.
I think we are very close here to replacing ancient LPG boiler with ASHP - the RHI will be very welcome to offset the huge costs!
Best wishes

Asharon, if you already have it, fit it. It can't hurt.
I think it works on diminishing returns principal though: 200mm gives 50% heat loss reduction, 300mm - 70%, 400mm - 80%, 600mm - 85% etc. The more you fit the better it is, but don't expect 400mm to be double the efficiency of 200mm
(figures plucked from the air for demonstration purposes btw)
Just watch the weight you're putting in the loft. one roll doesn't weigh all that much really when it's spread out, but imagine lifting ten of them or more which is what you'll be putting onto the bedroom ceiling timbers....
Mindovermatter, you're more than welcome. Have you noticed the sticky thread about heatpumps, we're discussing the payments over there and having a bit of a laugh about it...
If you have ANY questions I'm only a PM away

Just started to read up on this Cardew.....not for me of course, but it certainly will come in useful.......cheers.0
