LCD TV above fire - how safe is it?

Electronic equipment has to installed in a cool place away from sources of heat. You'll find this note in most User Manuals (read it). Ignore the advice and you can expect early failure. If the shop discovers the cause, they won't honour the guarantee.
Have you ordered the wall-mount bracket, by the way? These can be very expensive.0 -
I have a gas open fire and find most of the heat is radiated outward, i.e. the wall above is cool to touch. Perhaps you could check your own?
I also have a wall mounted digital TV but not above the fire. I find the TV gets very hot.
Thus, I doubt if it would get any hotter above the fire and IMHO it would not be a problem to install above a gas open fire.
I would suggest you get a pan and tilt swivel mount. Be careful to avoid a location where sun shines on the screen."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Thanks for all your advice.
The TV is now in place above the fire. We seldom use the fire and find the heat does radiate out . I will be placing a temp gauge on the mantle though just to keep an eye. The TV came supplied with a mount and went up very easy. As the fireplace wall is brick it is solid!
No reflections either - we have dual aspect and no matter where we sat tv before we always had a bit of glare but that is not the case now.
The amount of space it free up to is incredible. No Longer addicted to Boots! - Well not today anyway!! :blushing:

We have a 42" tv on our chimney breast. In place of the once open fire we have a living flame gas fire which is rarely on.Even when it is the heat goes outwards into the room and the wall remains cool.
I wouldn't risk it with an open fire/working flue but with our fire it's fine.Plus we don't find any problems viewing it on the wall. It's angled so we have a perfect view....

We have a plasma tv above the fireplace (which we never use anyway) it looks great!0 -
:T I am pleased it worked out for you Amanda, LCD / Plasma screens are great. The space taken up by an old fashioned TV is now free for more party guests :rotfl:
PS: It is worth getting your open gas fire serviced once a year, they can become very inefficient and possibly give off dangerous CO when the burners get glogged. A sure sign of trouble, is if you see any soot deposits above the fire."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi
