LCD TV above fire - how safe is it?

We have ordered a new LCd tv. Now trying to think where to put it in the living room.

You see a lot of them in mags and on tv programs on the wall above the fireplace.

We have a living flame gas fire. How safe is it to put a tv above the mantle.

Would be grateful for any comments / suggestions.

Many Thanks

It's not recommend to put a TV on a working flue, they can get very hot and with a real fire they can also get soot damaged.

  • I dont think this will be dangerous but if the TV is exposed to high levels of heat it could fail prematurely

We seldom have the fire on. I will check the temp above it next time the fire is on. The fireplace mantle is not too high but may have to do a test run when the tv arrives to see if the viewing angle is too uncomfortable. If nothing else it will stop DS 1 &2 from wlaking in front of the tv all the time when we are trying to watch it!!

If it's not too hot/ too close to the fire you can get a range of fixings which can help to get the angle right, I was looking at a catalogue just the other day as my DD wants a small LCD TV on the wall in her room and it will need to be on a tilt and swivel to make it comfortable to view it.

    It will be.

They look good in brochures above a fireplace but it will be a pain to watch.

A TV should be at eye level or slightly lower when viewing for maximum comfort. :)
  • What about suspending it from the celling? It looks very cool

You are not allowed to mount a TV on your chimney breast unless it is not in use AT ALL.
