Does anyone know whether it's possible to find access to a database of callout firms contact details without buying breakdown insurance?

The reason I ask is that my car is now too old to find multiple or perhaps even any quotes for European policies. I had wondered about joining ADAC, but this is said, possibly more accurately now than in the past, to be no longer possible.

I've had the car 15 years of its 19 year life, the only time broke down was over 12 years ago, and even that involved no callout, I just stopped at one garage then drove to a main dealer.

So actually paying for help or recovery if it's needed late at night looks like a risk worth taking, subject to needing some phone numbers ...

Edit: I'm making some progress looking on Google Maps for well chosen words like auto depannage, Pannenhilfe, Abscheppdienst, etc
  • Just purchased a new 18 plate Renault. On scrutiny of the Renault Assist Breakdown cover that came with the car, it seems that cars purchased after 1st January 2018 no longer will have European Breakdown cover, but perhaps more importantly, wheel changes, punctured tyres, damage to wheels or tyres are also no longer covered. The Clio comes with a puncture repair kit, no spare tyre. I can not visualise my good lady, who is the main driver, fiddling with a tyre repair kit at the side of the motorway and for this reason I now feel compelled to purchase alternative breakdown cover.
Buying a new Renault? Then indeed 'buyer beware'!
  • Hi all, I have been with Start Rescue now for three years. It costs me £29 per year for everything except Europe as I did not need european cover. That is roadside assistance, relay, home start and onward journey. It covers the car not the driver as in the more expensive policies. On top of that they throw in a years legal cover which I was paying £28 per year for through my insurance. I have called them out once and everything was fine. You do not need to pay and then claim the money back.

IMPORTANT: AutoAid is in the process of updating the policy wording regarding common-law partners, to clarify that they are also covered, subject to proof being provided within seven days.

I did not think common-law partners existed in UK law?

So why do you think that means companies can't offer to cover them if they choose to do so?

Because there's no such thing? They could by all means offer cover to non-married partners, or people cohabiting etc etc..

How would someone prove they are a "common-law partner" when they don't exist in the Uk.

It's up to the business to decide how they prove it - not up to you.
If you don't understand what it means read this, but most people do

Why are you trying to deprive people of something that's been offered?
I can assure you that people living together DO EXIST even if they have no legal status from it.
You are just being rather silly about it and I doubt you['ll change their policy.

Sorry, I didnt explain myself well as you've entirely missed my point. I'm not trying to deprive anyone of anything, nor suggest people living together don't exist (not entirely sure why anyone would think that?).

My point was that it doesnt make sense for a company to refere to common law partners in the UK. Indeed by doing so it may disadvantage people trying to make a claim using that term as their own understanding of what a common law partner is may differ to that of the insurance company given there is no legal definition in the UK.

I'm not sure that I'm being particularly silly about it, given it has obviously lead to confusion from others in the past.

If I was confused about it then I'd get it in email from them that the named person was covered and archive the email.

(I don't see any confusion about what is meant by it in your link - only some queries about whether it was offered or not and that has clearly changed.)
  • Just got renewal quote from AA went on greenflag site to get like for like quote- quoted me £180 cheaper. When back to AA after sticking to my guns after 4 counter offers they reduced their renewal offer by £160!
