Paid Bill But Not Recieved

Hi, I'm with Scottish Hydro and paid a 230 pound bill i February and have been contacted to say they haven't recieved it.

I paid the bill at the post office and unfortunately have lost the reciept. I went into the post office and the woman there searched the records but couldn't find any records of the transaction. Paid the gas bill at the same time and that was recieved so I suggested the woman search for a record of that to see a transaction at the same time but she couldn't find a record of that either.

Realize that it was incredibly dumb to lose the reciept but losing 230 pounds seems a large error, can anyone offer any advice?

How did you pay, paypoint that kind of thing, if so contact them ASAP, they will have records, the electricity will be able to give you the date, all you will need is the day and post office and account number the money was paid to.

But how was it paid, giro transfer, paypoint or did you throw the money in to the wind ?
It has to go through and agent, the agent will have records

  • Ah ok I guess it must have been paypoint. I'll give them a phone now but the only detail to link the transfer to us would be the account number which must have been incorrect for the bill not to go through. Thanks for the advice though, hopefully they can help.

Did they use your key or card when putting it through? If they gave you a receipt it must have gone through the vendors system to produce it. Did you check the receipt? Did it look right? Just wondering I case its been pocketed.

  • I phoned paypoint and they don't operate out of the post office I was in.

They provided a reciept and it all seemed legit, can't check it unfortunately as I'm sure it has been binned.

Can they not find a record at all for the amount paid in? If they record all payments and haven't it sounds very dodgy and you may need some legal advice on this.

They should have CCTV in there with it being a post office and if they can see you handing it over, they may need to investigate that member of staff.

Be open with the supplier, they may help initially with spreading payments if needed but it's not their issue so eventually they will revert to type.

    Good luck.

Whilst the PO may well have CCTV in operation, it would be most unusual for them to retain copies of recordings in excess of 1 month (unless previously asked to do so)

So no retained receipt, OP not even sure through which agent the bill was paid, no other record of the transaction by the payer or recipient and the creditor saying payment not received ... sounds like the OP will have to bite the bullet, learn from this expensive mistake and cough up. This time, if paying by cash again, ensure the receipt is retained until the creditor confirms receipt.

Usually PO's & banks will stamp the actual bill with the amount paid and return that to the customer...
