When child sizing is too small and adults too big.

I am struggling to find 12yo DS clothes (bottoms). Most shops I've been to seem to stop their children's range around 12/13 years old and start again in adult sizes in XSM. My problem is the children's largest size is too small and the adult's too big. Adding to the problem is DS's 'rugby players' thighs, meaning if they did fit round the waist and where the right length he frequently can't get them past his thighs. He tended to live in jogging bottoms for this reason, but even they are now too small/big.

Any ideas for where to go? I've tried sports soccer, matalan, primark, jd sports. My local M & S had nothing but it's a small rubbish store. BHS had a couple of possibilities, their sizing being 13/14 and 15/16 . Debenhams had some age 14s though they didn't look as though they'd fit.

Next do boys clothes up to age 16, but only in the catalogue or online: There's some nice jeans and chino's which make a nice change from trackies!. I got my boys a few basics from this range when they were at that awkward "in between" stage, and some of the styles come in regular, chunky or slim fit.

Boden do a teen range - it's pricey though.

I'd second Next, that's where my mum got clothes for my brother when he was at the 'in between' stage. It's really convenient to order things from them online as well.

I get my son Sturdyfit trousers for school, andd the rest of the time he prefers shorts or trackies. I buy the trousers from the local uniform stall in the market - they cost £14 a pair.

I've just found this site online:

I've got that issue with my 12yo DD. She is quite tall 5'2'' with very long legs, but is only 6 1/2 stone, so children clothes up to 13yo are too short for the legs, but size 6 is way to baggy around the waist and legs. It's a case of trial and error, but there are a lot more choices for girls then boys.

It's a pity Next has stopped selling teenage clothes in the shops. Their sizes are huge and I have quite a number of 16 year old outfits that fit me perfectly that i got on sale for next to nothing!!!

  • Hi, I too have this problem with my ds who is also 12. I find H&M good for boys clothes. They are not too expensive and my son tends to like them, which always helps!!

I buy from Next for my teenager - I couldn't find age 14, 15 etc. clothes in shops locally so I buy from the Next catalogue, but I try to get what I can in the half price sale!

He is very underweight, and Next do slim fit on some of their trousers :D

I get the majority of my youngest's clothes from Next too, although I try not to - but he's chunky, and Next are quite generous in their clothes, and do plus fittings on the school trousers. I buy standard joggers for him for PE because nowhere else's joggers have fit him.

These are the school trousers http://www.next.co.uk/shop/gender-olderboys-gender-youngerboys-category-trousers-use-schoolwear-0 and somewhere on the left you can select the ones they do in plus fit for chunky children, or slim fit for thinner children.

It's really annoying isn't it. My 16 year old is as tall as his dad but very very skinny so adult trousers are seriously big.

Top Man do a XS small size which worked for us a couple of years ago, especially the tshirts, but they are very pricey.

    Off to check out Next...

Thanks for the suggestions. That gives me several places to try. :T. I had looked in Next but in the shops the childrens range stops at age 12. I hadn't realised that it went higher in the catalogues (don't have one myself but can look at someone elses). Does anyone know if the older sizes from the catalogue would end up in an outlet store? We have one of them, not far away.

I ended up buying the generous fit school trousers last year from BHS due to problems with DS's thighs. I just hadn't considered we'd eventually run into problems with his everyday clothes.
