being woken up at dawn every day for past 3 weeks

Hi,

I don't know where to put this... very random, but doing my head in!

Every single day for the last 3 weeks I have been waking up at first light by a single bird flying into my bedroom window constantly. Literally every few seconds the whole of daylight hours it will peck at and fly into my window.

I was being waken up at 6.10 every morning. With the clocks changing its now 7.10. But I don't have my alarm set til gone 8... it's driving me crazy and I'm so tired!

The other weekend when I was working at home I had to move my desk and computer downstairs just to escape the bird! I slept downstairs at the weekend too so I could have a bit of a lay in...

Has anyone got any ideas what I can do to get it to stop? I don't have a bb gun lol.

I'm in the process of buying my own house and hoping like hell that goes through fast so I can escape the damn bird!

  • What an odd situation!

Does the early morning sun shine onto your window? Is there something shiney in your window? A mirror opposite it? Our chickens will peck like mad if there is something shiney at the windows and I'm wondering if this is what your new friend is finding so attractive!

You could try sticking up a piece of paper to block its reflection, or a cut out of a hawk/ falcon (there are window stickers commercially available)

We have this sometimes in Spring. If a bird starts it's likely to carry on for weeks. It thinks it's own reflection is a rival suitor.

In our case we've even had the odd raven doing it which, believe me, sounds like a machine gun going off in the early morning
We have found that putting a piece of shirring elastic across the window does the trick. Place the elastic in such a way that the bird can't land on the windowsill & stand to peck. If it's a smaller bird (so can settle in a smaller area) attach some tin foil strips to the elastic.
You'll have a rather eccentric looking house for a few weeks but you can always tell the neighbours you're celebrating the Jubilee/Olympics early ;):D

Its a territorial thing. The breeding season is upon us and this bird sees its reflection as a rival. Only yesterday we had one doing the same thing at work.

Making the window less reflective would help. You can get the greenhouse shading sheets (green mesh stuff) quite cheaply from garden centres, or you could use something like bubble wrap. You could fix some of this on the outside of the window as a temporary measure, just to deter it. Likely, after a few weeks, they will all have nests/eggs/young to look after and the bird will have more important things on its mind.

I posted a thread a while ago on the pets board, something along the lines of 'help a blackbird is driving me crazy' and I am afraid to say I tried all sorts, a dangly bird scarer, newspaper over the glass, bird of prey outlines, everything besides getting a cat! He is doing it less and less, actually only once today and is pottering round the garden now- we put food out and basically made friends (he likes apples best) so he is like an outdoor pet, and I notice when he doesn't come round!

Can you make your window less reflective from the outside? ours is the patio doors so I couldn't block it all, he did avoid the areas I covered with paper.

Put up a mirror below the window? bird will see a much more substatial rival there and hopefully go for that instead.
