Adding a wireless laptop to adsl desktop

Yes ditch the Tiscali modem and get your self a router.
Much more stable and secure connection plus you can share it between the p.c's.
If you are worried about banking etc.. then wireless encryption should be fine - though you can still connect your "main" pc to the router via cable and the laptop wirelessly that way there would be no way for the signal from the main pc to be intercepted.
I also recommend the Netgear 934G or 934GT (faster wireless). These have a built in ADSL modem and will do exactly what you need!
