Adding a wireless laptop to adsl desktop

Hi. Sorry if this has been asked before - I've read all the relevant threads I can find but can't find an answer to my problem.

We have an ordinary PC with Tiscali broadband through a BT line.

DS1 had just bought a laptop with wireless capability and wants to install an adsl router - he is confident this will work quite happily alongside our existing PC.

My question is - is he right? Our connection has recently settled down after being a bit temperamental and I don't want to upset it again!

Also, I'm worried about others intercepting the wireless signal. It won't matter about the stuff on the wireless laptop (college work and rude funnies mostly!) but we do all our banking on the main PC and I worry that this might somehow sort of leak out. (Yes I know I'm stupid - I'm happier making cakes than worrying about wires!)

If what DS wants to do is safe an practical, can anyone recommend a good router to buy?

Thanks in advance, hope someone out there can help us through the fog of technology!
Oh dear, here we go again.

There's no reason why a wireless router won't work. As for interception, you can follow the sticky on how to secure your network. An added advantage in using a router is that it will have a built in firewall, which may well make your set up more secure.
As for which one to use, I have a d link and have had no problems.

i can recommend a netgear dg834g. i have one and have had no major problems with it and its very reliable
  • just make sure you get an adsl one, e.g. dg834G and encrypt it (which looks harder than it is).

That's a cable/dsl router. Fine if you have cable or DSL, but no good if you have 'standard' ADSL Broadband I think.

Mate, I went off half cocked. This appears to be a router, not a modem/router so should be OK with your modem. Sorry for giving you a scare. Teach me to read more carefully.

  • Hi I have the same set up as you and I bought a Belkin ADSL Modem with Wireless G ROUTER and once connected it was working within 3 Mins , Belkin also have a Lifetime Warrenty with the products and my last Router was replaced Free when it stoped working some 4 years after I bought it !
The security side of it I would advise you that you should secure the Laptops connection which the Belkin will do for you , It will give you a code and you key this into the laptops settings and you will have more security , and also the helpline is very good and is only charged at national rate if you get stuck and they are available 24/7 . the unit is also very small and neat and is very easy to set up .
    Good luck .

I've looked at both the Netgear and Belkin routers recommended by posters and I'm a bit confused.

Do they include a modem, ie will I have to ditch my Tiscali modem and use this instead? I thought (hoped) I wouldn't have to disturb the connection we already have.

It is normal to ditch the cheap and nasty USB ISP supplied modem when using an ADSL wireless router, which contains it's own modem. Why don't you download the manual for the Netgear from here and read all about it.
