Question for a friend

Hi
I just need to ask a quick question.
My friend moved to the UK in 2005 from Thailand she is currently a single parent.
She is starting from scratch with the house having ended up in a hostel and her soon to be ex has held on to all the household items and is struggling to cover the expense to replace the essentials.
She claims JSA, HB & CTAX but would she be entitled to Tax credits?
xx

I wish people would read the post before answering, single parent surely means children, therefore YES, she can claim child tax credits and if she is claiming JSA there are no problems whatsoever with any immigration issues.
Good Luck and claim now and request 3 months backdated benefit before it's too lateForums can be/are a good guide to entitlement and it is good practice to back it up with clarification from the relevant department/specialist with written confirmation to safeguard yourself.0 -
i did read it. the OP says.....
She claims JSA, HB & CTAX but would she be entitled to Tax credits?
CTAX looks very much like 'child tax', or is that just me?
the only other tax credits are working tax credits, and as she claims JSA she isnt working.
maybe other people should read the whole post too!0 -
To answer the OP.
1. Introduce her to www.freegle.org.uk and https://www.freecycle.com ; you might also collect on her behalf?
2. Check here http://www.frn.org.uk/ and locate your nearest Furniture recycler. Most of them will provide furniture and household goods free or at minimum cost to people who are supported by their social worker.
Ask her social worker or Women's Aid for advice on resettlement support.
She should be getting CSA (15% of his income) from the ex.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -

Could it be council tax help? (I don't know, just that it was typed near HB?) Don't know what happens in hostels wrt council tax.:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0 -

My money (but not much of it) would be on CTAX meaning Council Tax benefit ?
Child Benefit seems to be missing from the list though ?0 -
Hi Allen & RAS
Thank you for your advise I will look into this for her and hopefully be able to help her. Unfortunately having lived a sheltered live for the last 7 years she doesn't know of any help available and those who are meant to be helping her seem to have taken advantage of this.
Nannytone,
By CTAX I actually meant council tax but thanks anyway.LBM: 6th January 2012

Then she should apply for child tax credit. As allen35 rightly said before the issue got confused, she should claim this asap and ask for 3 months backdating.0
