We did our save the dates 9 months before the wedding, 4 months before the main invites went out as lots of people will be travelling and it's the first week the schools go back so prime summer holiday season for most of our (child free) friends!
Dasiegg- just to add, we decided to do it as postcards so that we could add a sentence on the back. The evening invites had a clear statement along the lines of "Dear X and Y, We hope that you will be able to join us for the evening celebration of our wedding" so perhaps you could do similar (or a covering note if doing magnets etc)?
We're using moo.com for our photo thank you cards post wedding as everyone seems to recommend them. Plus I was over the MOOn when I saw their prices. Sorry, couldn't resist!!!
Very excited to be marrying my partner in crime for the last 7 years in September 2012 :jNo longer a midlandsfairy... back living in the sunny south!0 -
Ok to get round people thinking it's an invite (we had that prob - with the magnets!) make sure you put 'Invitation to follow....' It's suprising the number of people that don't 'get' save the dates!0

We sent out save the date fridge magnets (from ebay) around 14 months before our wedding... I understand the different vies on them but to us it made it feel more real. Seeing our names and the date written down! And it's lovely going around people's houses and seeing our magnet! (Although now they have invites as well!) It means people get plenty of notice and there can be no excuses nearer the time!Married my wonderful husband on 8/9/12 :j0

Well I've just ordered save the date postcards from Vistaprint - 100 free, and I paid for the slightly faster postage and I paid to have the heavier embossed paper and for plain envelopes so it came to about 20 in total - but still, 20 (sorry can't get pound sign to work!) for 100 is not bad and it's low enough that if they turn up and they're terrible, I won't feel like it's a huge waste of money to just not use them.
OH keeps talking about emailing Save the Dates and saying he will design something, but he keeps not getting round to doing it, and I would really prefer something physical - as someone said, it makes it seem 'real'! - so I just bit the bullet this morning and ordered these free postcards. He doesn't even know so hopefully they will be ok!!0 -
We're getting married on a bank holiday weekend and so have done Save the Day and Save the Night cards out for everyone. This way there is no confusion over people saving the day if they're only invited to the evening. We're having our stationary done as a wedding gift from a friend who does that stuff, hence we're doing a STD, not sure if we would have paid to do them otherwise. I think an e-mail/Facebook thing would have sufficed. If you like my post, please click the THANKS

I did Save the Date cards as my wedding is on a bank holiday weekend.
I ordered them from Vistaprint and then ordered the invitations in the same design.
I was going to send them out a year in advance but one of the extended family died a week before I was going to send them and I thought it wasn't a good time so I waited a couple of months after his memorial service last July (wedding is in May).
I only sent them to day guests to avoid confusion
OH's family liked things to be traditional so email was out of the question.0
