Paying for unlock codes on eBay ?

Hi all

I'm looking to help someone unlock a HTC Salsa. There's a seller on eBay doing for as little as £1.95, is this too good to be true. The seller on eBay is unlock fusion.

I just need a little reassurance as this is not something I have done before, are there any issues with sending over an IMEI number to a third party.

Thanks in advance.

  • If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Gut feeling and common sense tell me it would be a very bad idea. Find a local company with physical premises that has been there for a long time. It'll be more expensive, but likely to be much more reliable. Plus, if something does go wrong, complaining in person is usually much more effective.

    Thanks for the prompt reply.

It appears that the seller does have good feedback. I'm willing to take a punt at only £1.95 but I want to know is there a possibility of damaging the phone by enetering an erroneous code.

Ive done it loads of times, paying as little as 99p - and never had a problem.

Saved a fortune, as my local shop charges £10.

I have entered the code wrong a couple of times (typo) and it just let me do it again (Not on this particular phone though).

As for a local shop being more reliable - how many shops have feedback you can read through first? Your just paying extra for their overheads.

If you can find ebay sellers that cheaply you can usually find the information for free if you look hard enough.

Just look at all the people flogging secrets for your car, We get lots of new members on our club forums who come and tell us they ONLY paid 99p or £3.99 or whatever for secret information thats on the site for free and often in the cars handbook or freely available on the net elsewhere.

  • To those that might be interested, I took a punt and paid £1.95. I then had to submit the IMEI code. I promptly received an unlock code, entered it into the phone and hey presto phone unlocked!

I've only done it for things that aren't easy to do yourself. I paid about £7 instead of £10 though websites and £15 from a guy in the market.

Even if the code doesn't work as long as you pay though Paypal you will get your money back

i have used Paypal to pay for unlock codes on the web and got my money back for a couple that didn't work

So just remember to pay with Paypal if you have an account.

Intangible item? Possibly not covered by buyer protection?
