If it's a router, the settings are stored within the router, not on the pc.
You may need to download ethernet drivers, if XP doesn't install them automatically - If you have a factory restore partition, that is usually the best way to do a reinstall.!!

I dont know much about computers to be honest. I have a modem that plugs into a router which says tp-link on it (cable/dsl router tl-r402m)
I have another computer that goes into that router and my ps3.
My plan was just going to be to insert the xp cd (boot from cd) and create a new ntfs partition and install windows onto it. Is that correct?

more or less, you will have to use the existing partition, and as I said, xp may not come with all the drivers for the machine, often network/sound drivers are missing
if it has a factory restore partition, it's easier, what's the make/model, and why are you reinstalling.!!

The pc is a packard bell intel celeron 2.8 ghz (its an old pc)
I'm re-installing becuase the pc keeps getting virus's, going slow and just doing my head in. I have done all the usual stuff (suggested on here) which seems ok for abit and then it just goes slow again.....
So ive had enough and want a fresh install of windows as i need this to be running as quick as it can
How would i know if it has a factory restore partition?
My main concern is getting the pc's to recognise the internet/router when i have re-installled windows, as this is the most important thing for me......that the pc's connect to the internet easily.
I have saved my cv and a few other personal files onto a dongle/mem card so im not sure if i have to back up anything else before i go ahead with this?
Cheers for the advice, appreciate it..0 -

It will say in the manual, or on the manufacturer's support pages for your model.
The internet connection details will be fine, as they are held in your router. You will however lose any settings for your desktop email accounts (u/name and password) and these will require setting up again.
Why does the PV keep 'getting viruses'? What AV program are you using? No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

I dont use outlook express so i think the bit you mentioned about email passwords should be ok for me?
I was mainly using kapersky, but it slowed down my pc quite abit over time and i was still getting error msgs and problems.
I ran many of the checks advised on here (cc cleaner etc) but the problems kept coming back. Right now i just needed the fastest pc i can have so thought i might aswell do a fresh install as that will make it run quickly again.
Sadly i dont have any manuals, cd's or anything else regarding this pc so still unsure about the factory restore partition. (have just checked packard bells website but the support pages dont go that far back to my make and model)

So what email program are you using? If you use a webmail service then you just log in through your browser as normal. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Just using normal gmail and hotmail accounts, so i think im ok and dont need to save any settings.
Since im with virgin would i need to download any software or drivers to get the internet up and running or will xp just recognise it automatically?0 -
Gmail and Hotmail are webmail systems, if you're accessing those through your browser then nothing there to be lost apart from your normal login info.
All you need to connect to your ISP is the standard username and password, which are stored in your router, not on your PC.
XP won't 'recognise' it because there is nothing for it to recognise. The internet connection is handled by the router, not the PC.
Worst case, if your router drops the configuration then you just log into it via the browser interface and re-enter the info.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Ok thanks mate, seems like it should be fine then after the re-install
Sorry if this is a silly question but if my router does drop the config, how would i log in and re-enter the info? ( i dont have the user name and password?)
I cant think of anything else that needs a back up (apart from things like my cv and a few other files) im not missing out anything obvious am i?
Before i re-install i just want to make sure i have everything i need so i can set up the new xp just like my old one...0
