how much should this cost

my brakes are making an awful noise, its a mazda and needs new brake discs and pads. does anyone have any idea how much i should expect to pay for this

What sort of noise?
When does it make it?
How do you know it needs new discs and pads?
What Mazda is it - year, model, etc.?

thanks for the reply, i took it into a garage and thats what they have said it needs,
its a 2003 mazda 323

around £221, just want to see how this compares

On the 323 the noise you hear are the wear indicators which start to sqeal as a warning that the pads have almost worn right down.

Obviously the pads need changing but that does not mean the discs need replacing. Ask the garage what is wrong with the discs.

i was wondering how they would know this because they only looked at it on the forecourt while my son was still in the car, it wasnt up on a ramp or anything

If the discs are bad enough a visual check through the wheel can be enough, otherwise they need measuring and assessing with the wheel removed. With your car being9 years old it's a good bet that the discs may be past it or corroded if never changed and you mechanic can see this looking on the ground. Is that price for front pads and discs? Rears? All round? (providing the rears arnt drum brakes of course)

If its only for fronts (will be both sides pass and driver) sound a little expensive. I'd get a few more quotes

ive got a quote off a forum on facebook where the guy says he will do it for £30 if i buy the parts. I dont know what to do, am skint but obviously brakes are important and i dont know this guy
