Hey all,

We’ve had an ’02’ Lexus SC430 since it was 2 years old, and wanted another convertible to replace it, again about 2 years old. It’s only got 58k on it, but we’re wanting to get rid of it before it starts to get scruffy. Mainly a summer car, so spends most the year spent on the drive as we can’t afford to run it!

In the ideal world, we’re looking at whatever we can get for Lexy (about £10000) + about £30000 (want to do it next month when divs get paid), and want something with 4 seats, leathers etc. and preferably that does a damn sight more than the 23mpg average we get from it! Will possibly have a diesel, but definitely want an Auto again. We effectively want to give up the GS for one.

Something like the A5 TDi/3-series ‘d’/E-class CDi etc etc etc.

Any ideas from someone that’s got one?

You'll get nowhere near £10,000 for your 02 motor, nearer half that.

I laugh when I hear about people willing to pay £40k for a motor yet worry about MPG.

You've done about 5800 miles a year in this car. At 23 MPG that's around 250 gallons, or 1150 litres. Or £1600 a year, even at today's petrol prices.

Let's say you replaced it with a car which did 28mpg. You'd save a whole £300 a year.

PS. A diesel is NOT a good choice for occaisional summer use. Especially the latest Euro 5 diesels, with their DPFs. You could easily find that the money you save on fuel is eaten up by repair bills. I would strongly recommend a petrol for this type of use.

me that vax has had a run-in with this allegation themselves and are paranoid that everyone else is likely to get investigated for it.

Why would anyone want a convertible with a tractor engine, they simply do not go together, unless the roof isn't going to come down in the lovely British countryside, or whats left of it.

If its just for cruising round town with the other Audi convertibles then i suppose a Diesel would be acceptable, you can't hear yourself scream in a modern town full of Diesels so the rattling oil burner will just blend into the din.

I may be wrong but I think the OP said they were waiting for the dividends payout to put towards it so its down to being a director of a Ltd company and its associated tax perks (cough "tax dodge" cough)........;)

You gotta admire the previous/present Goverments tax rules....

That doesn’t really sound good, does it?

The idea was to replace 2 cars with 1, so it will be doing about 40k/year.

It can be more cost effective to just have two cars that do their thing well rather than one car that is a compromise, especially if you're looking at spending 40 grand, and which point the increase in tax and insurance is negligible.

Something like a Mazda MX5 and a diesel Ford Focus or Mondeo, both of which can be had brand new for less than 40 grand, would do the job well.

Personally for a summer convertible fun car I'd be more inclined to go for a classic of some sort.

Analyse the miles you do and what you want for each.

As has been said you might find 2(or even 3 cars) a better option.

A saloon converted to a convertible running a diesel engine sounds like a compromise on top of a compromise.

Perhaps spend £30k on a Porsche Boxter S and the rest on fuel? Unless you really need 4 seats
