What are people paying for a basic puncture repair?

Charged £18 by a local independent who is normally very good on new tyres.

    Nothing at all!

If you buy your tyres from Formula 1 they don't charge for any puncture repairs :)
(and since they price match, even internet prices, why would you bother going elsewhere?)

They seem to currently have about 60 branches across England, but the most Northern seems to be in Doncaster and none further SW than Bristol/Poole

Not a fan of national chains but I will look at them next time , the closest is about 6 miles away.

Think Kwik Fit used to offer something similar in the past for tyres brought from them.

It has been a while since I actually got a tyre repaired, the last two instances were too close to the side wall.

Last two I had, 1 from a local independent, and the other from a chain (National i think)

    Both were a tenner

    £10 here.

    £18 seems excessive.

18 does seem a bit much. Best I've had is £6.
