Yes, but can they build it in time....

A “new city” has been proposed for the English countryside as radical planning powers are to be unveiled by ministers.

Sounds impressive.

But will it be enough houses, and can they build it in time, given that we're adding close to a million people every 2 years.
Up to 100,000 homes would be built on green belt in the Midlands near the controversial High Speed 2 rail route as part of a dramatic expansion of housing.

Oh.....

Never mind. :)

I share your doubts about building houses in time.

Will we continue to add 1/2m to the population every year? That I doubt. I suspect the migration trend will go into reverse as it does in any free country during times of hardship.

People have been saying that since 2007.

And instead of falling, it has increased.

I agree with that as well.

UK governments have been completely tolerant to mass immigration and they have provided unusually generous social provisions for new immigrants. The bill for this largesse however has cought up with us and some point the tide will turn.

    In time!!

    In time for what??
  • In time!!

    In time for what??

I know that nothing in the article or any sensible reading of it [see the 600-odd reader comments for an example] suggests this, but somewhere out there a rather peculiar Scotsman rubs his hands with glee whenever he reads an article about increasing population.

This is because, not caring a jot for any of the normal responses that such an article might provoke, he hopes that population growth will make the two residential properties that he owns in Scotland more valuable than would otherwise have been the case.

I assume that in this case he means "[not] in time" to dampen a collossal property price spike that will enable him easily fund 100 years' worth of exceptionaly fine living per pwoperdee that he sells prior to his retirement.
    FACT.

    Of course not.

They couldn't even get a small town off the ground in Devon after around a decade due to NIMBY's.

In my opinion, the tide will only turn when the pot containing free handouts is empty.

A 10% + increase in the population of England in 10 years is a 'king big deal, much bigger than many seem to realise and even by any historical standards it is immense.

I don't want to agree with Hamish but there is definitely not going to be enough housing.
    I think....

A lot of people around here completely and utterly failing to understand the enormity of what is about to happen.

..but if we remove the 'props' etc. that will make prices cheaper and everything will be ok

..but if you divide the number of bedrooms by the number of people you'll see there are plenty

..but if we have a bird flu epidemic it might wipe out a swathe of those house blocking boomers and we can move in

There's a shock in store for the denialists when we get some economic growth in the system
