My nails used to break and sometimes split, I was told to condition my nails and that I wasn't paying enough attention to the new growth. I give myself a weekly manicure and treat my cuticles, I use nail oil and then sally hansen nail thickner or nail hardener. Everytime I remove or change my nail polish I use nail oil or serum. I also condition my nails after swimming and have used olive oil if I'm not at home.

This has helped and now I often have to cut them because they grow too long. I use a glass nail file and wear rubber gloves and use hand cream. I didn't realise how much my nails were exposed to water or chemicals before I started protecting them.

Similar problems here. Washing up really does wreck the nails. I use gloves at all times when cleaning, its a pain but you get used to it eventually. Also regular use of hand cream, blending down into the nail and cuticle. Main thing that improved them was using Leighton Denny Crystal nail file. You can get them in Boots and also on his website.
Even after all that my left thumb nail (I am left handed) always peels.....but the rest are really good.

Best thing you can do is make sure you're getting enough vitamins. You can get cheap hair skin and nail vitamins in tesco. Weak nails are definitely a sign you are not getting good enough nutrition.

Keep nails short till they are in better condition, longer nails are really prone to flaking. Using a nail buffer also helps. When you file nails do it in one smooth motion, no sawing movements.

Massaging cuticle oil stimulates the nail beds and encourages nail growth. You could also try using a nail strengthener. There are quite a few available, one by OPI is quite popular but I use one by 17 which does the job and is fairly cheap.

thank you for all the replies, appreciate it
I do have a glass nail file and a leighton denny buffer too
where do you buy the products recommended from
    thank you
  • I agree with Leighton Denny crystal file and Nail envy - also use cutical cream/oil and handcream as much as you can
OPI is on QVC today and there was a good OPI nail envy duo on :)
  • Over the last 2 years or so I've tried Sally Hanson products, Avon products, OPI, Mavala, various hand creams and nail/cuticle oils, acetone free polish remover. I always use cuticle oil when I do a manicure (about once a week), I regularly give my nails time without polish, I always wear gloves for washing up and cleaning.

Despite all this, my nails are awful and split/peel non stop.

    I'm at a loss.

I use Nail Envy as a strenthener, but most important is cuticle oil.
Not just when you manicure use it as often as you can - 3-4 times a day.

Protect nails with gloves when cleaning/gardening etc.

Keep nails short to begin with - file with a crystal nail file (different to glass).

Nails don't need to be naked - they are dead and don't breath so i will help keeping them polishe all the time as it will protect them. Oil the cuticle and first phalange. This means the new nail as it grows through will be in much better condition. Once the nail has grown all the treatments are superficial.

Finally remember it takes at least three months for new nail to grow through.

I take Perfectil for Nails and Hair. It took three months to make a difference but my nails and hair certainly look healthier.
