i think doing it through your nose helps the steam to penerate your sinuses etc.

In through the nose and out through your mouth. A drop Olbas Oil helps unblock things too.

Not sure if it would work for eardrums, but I used to wash my nose out to help with blocked sinuses. Get an old washing up liquid bottle. Fill it with warm water and dissolve about teaspoon of salt and half a teaspoon of bicarb in it. Lean over the sink and squirt about half the liquid up one nostril and it will come out the other one. Switch sides for the other half of the bottle. It sound gross but it's strangely soothing and it does help clear the mucus out.
Here I go again on my own....

If you want to really clear out any "gunk", you'll need to do the steam inhalation once an hour, every hour (you're awake) or at least as often as you can - for a few days. It can take several days to get some of it out. TMI, but you'll definitely know when it comes out ;)

If you do this, you should use sterilised water and equipment. There was a thread on this recently on the board; there is a small danger of introducing infections into the head. Unfortunately although a small probability such infections can be quite serious.
  • Using menthol crystals in the water is fab as well. Just don't use too many! One or two crystals is more than enough. I've got asthma and I use them when I feel a chest infection coming on - if I catch it early enough, I can manage without antibiotics.

I'm asthmatic, never thought of doing this, where do you buy your crystals from?
