HAve you got the old style profile? This is based on their new 'timeline' profile.
not got Timeline - my page is set to private but would like to hide it so no one could see my name if they typed it in.

Think you have to update to the new one then. I used to have the same settings on the old one but I bet they have changed it so people update to the new style.

Yes, I'd say that was likely. I see the rumours that everyone would be upgraded to Timeline whether they wanted to be or not haven't so far materialised.
As for the thread topic, I'd tend to suspect that this is more a cause for concern in the USA than here.

Blimey is thread for real? Employers asking for login details? Thats bad isn't it. Next thing you know they'll want your email login too - why on earth would they want to see what you do in your private life?

Be careful though, they could always sniff your passwords via the workplace intranet (assuming the login page isn't using SSL) so be careful what you login to from work computers.

I think I'd give them a false password (oh you must of got the wrong capitals and lowercase letters.. and why were you actually trying to login without my permission?) or deny even using the service (No, that must be someone else with the same name). I wouldn't give them my pin number for my cashpoint card and the password to any service you use serves the same purpose - to keep people out.

Very strange behaviour if you ask me. I used to login to my webmail from work but I was always aware that they might be able to record my password. The day they did the dirty on me and I walked out I changed it within minutes.

I've just looked at how people can search for you on f/b, as I have my privacy tied down as tight as possible. If I'm reading it right, if someone knows your mobile no or your email, then a search will still find you. The only thing I can think of to get round that one is to not give f/b your mobile no, and to make sure the email you use for your personal life (and therefore use for fb) is entirely different to anything you'd give out professionally, eg on a cv.
Reason for edit? Can spell, can't type!

Just use an email provider that gives you disposable email addresses and use a disposable address for your facebook.

I don't use FB, never have and never will but I suspect one day it'll become a cultural sin if you're not on it and people will gossip about how so-and-so must be weird because they're not on it etc.
