Best broadband options for a first time user?

Since we moved into our home some 4 years ago we've never had BT activate our phone line - we've simply never needed a phone.
Now we want to get broadband - what would our best options be? We don't need a landline phone, but do we still need to get BT to activate the line, and rent it from them?
Thanks in advance
Dan

Anyone can manage the line. Tesco Broadband seems quite cheap if you don't want it for calls. £16.25 a month for 12 months.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

No, you can get the line reconnected by and pay line rental to many other providers-it doesn't have to be BT Retail.
But however you do have to pay line rental and have an active line to get any ADSL broadband service.
All BT tariffs include some element of inclusive calls. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
thanks for the advice - much appreciated0
