web design

Hi
I want to start a web site and have tried a few domain hosts and found them restrictive , uncommunicative and with lots of hidden extras. e.g pipex will host basically for £2.99 a year, but then add extra if you want anything other than basic templates - which they don't let you preview or answer emails, £19.99 if you want to come up in a google search and that is just the tip of the iceberg.

How easy would it be to register my own .co.uk address and who with and buy software for web design and surely google is supposed to search the net and make its money by sponsored sites.

I wonder if I am trying to run before I can walk and would welcome constructive input.

TIA

  • I use https://www.netweaver.co.uk, who charge me £7.00 for registering a .co.uk name for 2 years and £35 for 1GB of space (per year). They've been pretty good to me and they're up front about their (well priced) costs.

Registering with google doesn't cost anything.. just go here

You don't need much software to make a website - a text editor and a graphics editor should do the job
  • Don't want to spam but the company I run offers web hosting services. Here's the basic package we do:

Web hosting for one year including 1000 GB/month bandwidth, 100 MB space, webmail, PHP/MySQL, phpBB plus more - £12 (please ask for a quote for higher bandwith etc.)

If you're interested, or if you'd like a quote for different specs and a domain, or need any advice, give me a pm.

BTW, while you can build a site with just a text editor, it's much quicker (and easier if you're learning) to use a web design app, I use Dreamweaver which is one of the best. There are cheaper and free alternatives however depending on what OS you're using, just avoid Frontpage at all costs.
  • There lots good places I would say take look this website http://www.webmaster-talk.com
and ask about on there they have loads of people trying to sell web space and usually much cheaper than companies and as far as designing goes you can buy templates from Ebay or you can get book learn html and just use a text editor or you can download a trial version of dreamweaver its like most things whatever you fill happy with and find easiest.

    I'd recommend godaddy.com for hosting.
Your main issue Patch is getting people to your website and even if you get goggle listed you may find you're on page 5003...and the truth is most people don't go past page 3/4. There's a hole debate on how to get high listings but it involves all sorts of things like links to your website from relevant websites, keywords within your website. I tend to go with google adwords (pay per click on your chosen keywords) as this can bring you instant traffic but adwords will cost.

Im a big fan of catalyst2 (http://www.catalyst2.com/) who offer both unix and windows based hosting for very reasonable prices. Support is excellent and they have a good user-base of like minded people who will help you with any problems you may have with the creation of your site.

    Nice to save.

What the OP is asking for is something that isn't free, especially not if you want it done professionally.

Some people here do offer a decent service, but I can understand why the rule stands for no advertising, otherwise it could end up just being a marketplace.

SEO goes a lot further than just buying keywords.
    - You need to make your site accessible for bots to trawl through it. This is in terms of the code you use, links, descriptions, content etc...
    - Use the page meta-data correctly.
    - In terms of google, links to you from reputable sites (the more so the better) help your rank.
    - And finally buying keywords (if they're available) helps, but can end up being expensive. I know we manage hundreds. Some are more expensive than others.
