Been finding some sites won't load so cleared cookies etc. and did a speed check, but this froze and just said "preparing to start" so went to another speed test site, this started and then froze after 30% of the test! What should I do next?

If you connect wirelessly, try using a wired connection to see if the problem is with the wireless signal.
Run the test in another browser (preferably a freshly-installed one with no add-ons) to see if the issue is caused by a browser problem (corrupt files, buggy add-ons, etc.).
Try another computer on the network (to see if the problem is related to the PC in question)...?
Assuming you're using ADSL (as opposed to cable), run the test from the BT test socket (behind the master socket faceplate) to see if the problem is related to your internal wiring...?
Unplug all devices from your phone network except for the router and ensure that you are using a microfilter. Test again using another another microfilter. That should tell you if a microfilter or another connected device on your phone network is faulty.0 -
Thanks for great reply, am with Talk talk and this seems to happen in the evenings, wireless, same result with Safari, Chrome and firefox.
Router is in main socket and filters are in place.
Just done another test, Chrome 3.8Mb/s, Firefox 4.9Mb/s.
perhaps it is all the neighbors gaming in the evenings!0 -

TalkTalk throttle speeds at peak times though...(no doubt Espresso will correct me as Espresso knows everything)0 -

not neccessarily, unless you're on a very congested exchange or if you're on an IPStream connection (i.e. NOT LLU) which TT don't have control over...my TT LLU line isn't throttled at all (but then I don't do filesharing/torrents/exceed download limits(coz I don't have any)/other such stuff)
......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
More likely just a contention issue if it's evenings only. Are you on an LLU service with TT?No free lunch, and no free laptop0

If you have eliminated the possibility of any problems with your PC, wireless connection and internal wiring then the "problem" must exist with the external network. Have you asked Talk Talk to investigate?0 -
Well I spoke to TT some years ago and a guy came and did something to speed up my connection. Not sure what LLU is but we are on a new estate with copper wires for the phone.
I am leaving TT as I promised I would if they kept phoning me! See my other post. https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/38672670
