Our second baby is due at the end of Christmas and I can't wait to start breastfeeding again!0 -
Congratulations GadgetFreak. I am agreeing with everything these other ladies have said about breastfeeding. My daughter is now 4. Persevere and it all gets better - for the first week it felt as if my daughter had needles in her gums, I had bruised engorged breasts and hated it. I really wanted to succeed and it was far more painful than my caesarean section. I used the fantastic Kamillosan which was a great help. I fed my daughter until she was 11 months and used the feed her in bed and we'd both doze off again. I think it helped our bond enormously and I clearly remember when she was a few months old, she would look up at me when she was feeding and say 'goo' as if to say, 'I love you mummy!' and it was the best. Expressing does help and my daughter was on one bottle of expressed milk a day which my hubby could give her, it also meant she could be looked after by her grandparents. At 5 weeks I introduced her to the odd bottle of formula too, if I hadn't expressed any and from then on she was mostly breastfed, but with the odd bottle thrown in too. Even for one bottle a day the sterilising was a pain and the kitchen always seemed to be full of bottles cooling down.
From a money saving point of view, formula is expensive too.
BUT, if after a few weeks, it really does make your wife miserable, don't let her beat herself up about it.
The best thing is it's portable, and you become really discreet about feeding in public, I never had anyone complain! I often fed my daughter in the pub garden and noone took any notice.
An NCT breastfeeding counsellor helped me too, as did loads of midwives in hospital. I also fed my daughter football hold for the first few weeks as the positioning was better. I used a v shaped pillow (about £5 from Argos) which lifted her up to my level, so it was more comfortable. Get your wife to learn to feed lying down, then it's relaxing for both of them.
Good luck!0 -

Congratulations, and glad to hear everything's going well now!
It is difficult, but your wifes done really well to carry on. I stopped feeding my little boy when he was two weeks old, but then I was determined and started again a few days later. It just takes time and persistence....!
Good luck with the future, and have fun! They grow up so quick! Please visit - www.justformumz.co.uk - a new website for Mums, Mums-to-be, and even Dads too!0 -
I can recommend the Kamillosan too or any camomile cream0
