Terrylw1: I dont use the economy 7 heating because I have a wood burner which heats the place (its a very small house!).

I do have 2 meters - I presume one is 24 hour and the other is for the economy 7 heaters.

Can you explain what you mean by " It does means that your heating is going to change yo the new pattern of bursting"?

    Also, what is MPAN?
    Thanks

The MPAN is the registration number for your meter point. You can have multiple meters attached to it if the meters work the same but if you have a standard 24hr power meter + off peak meter you will have 2 for your meter point. These will be displayed on your bill with your supply number.

What I meant by a heating change is if you go to E7 the time you receive off peak heat will change since E7 either works as 1 7 hour block in the night or 1 short evening + remainder heat hours middle of the night (known as a split differential E7).

An old off peak meter will be set to provide 1-3 boosts which will largely be for daytime since these meters were originally more for the elderly who need more heat/hot water away from overnight hours.

    Hi,
Ill try and answer your questions as best I can. Let me know if you need further clarification:
Are you paying a standing charge on the E7 meter that is still connected?
No. I have economy 7 heaters, but dont turn them on because if its cold I put a jumper on.
But how do you heat your hot water?
The immersion tank is on a timer which comes on for 30 minutes each morning at 6.30am. The electric shower heats the water used for showering.

I dont know whether I have "Economy 7" or "off-peak". I have E7 heaters, so assumed I was on E7.

I would like the meters amalgamated into one if possible because it would give me more physical space (every inch counts in my house!) and would update the hardware (it looks pretty old).

That's not the question I asked. Are you actually on an E7 tariff? No need to assume anything. If you don't know, look at your bill and online account. It will be obvious, as you'll be billed on a 2 rate tariff (day and night rate). It's likely (without E7 heating) that you are using a negligible amount on cheap rate, not the c. 30% generally neeeded to make E7 viable.

Putting aside the question of cost for the moment you have to make a very simple decision. Do you ever want to use your storage heaters again? If the answer is "no" you need to instruct your supplier to remove the "off-peak" meter (for which there may be a charge and (optionally) get your elusive electrician to remove your storage heaters which will free up a lot more space than combining two meters:).

If the answer is that you might want to use the storage heaters in the future - and you want the two meters combining - then you need to inform your supplier you want to go on to E7 (for which there may be a charge). Really you need to make up your mind, be guided by the elusive electrician and engage with your electricity supplier. For starters ask you supplier what metering arrangement they *think* you have. When you have done that, if you are not clear, come back here for specific advice.

There's an important point that hasn't really been brought out here yet.

If you are on Economy 7 then you get cheap electricity during the night, but pay extra for any electricity you use during the day.

If you really don't need cheap night-time electricity for the storage heaters, then you could save quite a lot of money by switching to a single meter and a standard tariff.

If you don't know what electricity plan you are currently on, then it's worth finding out, as you could be paying considerably more than you need to. If you're not sure, then your bills should tell you, or phone your supplier's help line.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

As Jalexa says, get the off peak meter removed but if there is any attached load, the engineer will abort so resolve that first or be onsite to advise when he gets there.

    Hi dllive

As you've two meters, it's likely you're on what's known as Restricted Hours Tariff (RHT) metering. This is mainly for all electric properties with storage heaters.

With this type of set up, the meters will be wired directly into the heating and water heating circuits at the property. This is to take advantage of cheaper off peak periods of electricity for heating/water heating purposes.

You're doing exactly the right thing in involving an electrician. It's always best to check out the implications of changing the metering set up because of this particular type of wiring.

As Jalexa says, once you've decided on the type of set up you want, talk to us about changing the meter. We're currently charging £51.06 (including VAT) to change a meter.

Hope this helps dllive. Give me a shout if you need any more info as will be happy to help.
