Hi Pineapple123 - I assume that they took the payment for March on around the 6th, but until we get to April we don't know if they are proposing to take a payment on the 6th, and another one on the 25th.

Clarify this on the phone and advise them that if that is their intention, you will immediately contact your bank to claw back the second D/D

You know know the true value of your credit with an entire Summer to build up a new one for Winter - Claim it back by letter

Thanks for that. Yes I will ask them their intention as you say and if it is as it sounds in their letter I wil be calling my bank (and telling EDF this too). I am now ready ready to switch companies!

Hi Pineapple, i belive the reason that your direct debit has changed date, at EDF to activate a credit refund we have to cancel your current direct debit , send the refund, then re-set up the direct debit, when we set the direct debit back up if it is to close to your prefered date then it will state an alternative payment date ,eg 26th then revert back to agreed date , there will be two payments close together but i think there will be no extra payments.
if there is you can contact your back and ask for a indemnity claim.
also regarding the reason you were asked to take reading everyday is because that is the first step to see if your meter is faulty(to see if they run in line) otherwise if someone was sent out and the meter is not faulty the customer would be charged.

Also prices for gas went up by approx 15% last year.

That's a bad billing system the mince its twice the work and just causes all this hassle for the customers who don't get told this. Clearly whoever designed, signed off and tested that is an idiot!

Taking 7 days of readings will allow a daily average to be determined, but the key point is to compare it to previous consumption where the customers states there has been no change in usage. If the meter is speeding, its daily average afterall will be consistent in the 7 day daily averages...just consistently too high.

Ah. That explains the bizarre MyAccount behaviour and "first DD" letter when I requested a refund recently. Wasn't close to the next payment date and in the end the DD process was seamless. Given I had received a full refund quite "surprised" the subsequent DD was the same amount and not the usual "random" recalculation.:D Must have been done manually. As Terrylw1 says "mince".

A tip for others. When requesting a refund, always "prepare the battlefield" by submitting a customer read first to get a bill generated (or note the screen update when you submit the reading). The account balance looks better if you do this just after the monthly payment has been "credited". Which is a few days before the payment is even collected:).
  • The £120 payment shows as £114. so who knows where the rest of that is. (probably VAT).

@ Pineapple 123....Mine was the same,I queried why it is showing as £114.29(which is £120- 20% vat)

But if you look at the total vat at the bottom of your bill you should see the amount is less £5.71,which is the vat content of £120.

I phoned and put a complaint in that it will confuse everyone doing it that way

I have done that, but am questioning it as last winter was longer and colder than this one, so my consumption last year should have been higher. However, apart from trying to get EDF to tell me what my consumption was for the same period (as the bills are so complicated it's impossible to work out) which they still haven't done, I am still trying to work it out myself.

No it's not, all you need are the comparative periods and the unit readings from those bills. Deduct closing from opening gives you the usage for that billing period. Compare one year to the next.
Electricity is already in kWh units. For gas, just convert to kWh using the necessary factor for your meter (metric or imperial). Plenty of help on here if you post the figures.

EDF's bills ARE complicated because they just cancel the previous bills and carry forward the balance. That means you need to look at the previous bills in order to understand how they have calculated the carry forward balance. This is made even more difficult on their online site by removing the cancelled bills so you can't see them.

EDF are a nightmare to deal with.
