My daughter is looking to buy a netbook for school work (she does have access to a desktop) She has found one for sale (a sensible girl at school - whose mum works at the school - so happy to buy from her- that's not an issue)
It is a Samsung NP-NC10 10.2" 1.6 GHz netbook black. Excellent condition...£140
It operating system is windows xp - about 3 years old - Microsoft office 2007 on it, it has all been formatted, and got all the latest updates on it.
Does that sound a reasonable price? Is she likely to encounter any problems with a model that old? Roughly how long do batteries last?
Have looked and new netbooks seem to be at least £200 upwards, she will probably use is mainly for surfing, homework normal stuff
Any comments greatly appreciated
Thanks

I wouldn't spend £140 on a 3 year old netbook, considering refurbished 6-month ones are £170. Try to get it sub-£100.0

No, that's a ridiculously high price.
I got a new, unused, Windows 7 Starter MSI netbook recently from a local Cash Converter type place for under £100.I shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.

The battery will most likely be below capacity and won't hold a decent charge. Could be £100 for a replacement.
I think £170 to far too high as well.0 -
you could buy a new (refurb?) netbook from argos from around £150

I wouldn't. You can often pick up a MSI Wind U135 from Argos Outlet for a little more, but that comes with a full twelve month warranty. Plus you'll have the choice of XP and/or Windows 7.0 -
Thanks for all your input, I had looked at argos outlet but the amount of negative/neutral feedback concerned me.
Just to say DD has decided to carry on saving and get a laptop!! so looks like I don't get my laptop back anytime soon! Thanks to MSE savings we got to go to Disneyworld Florida.

If your daughter does change her mind. I bought my PB netbook for £199 from Very. It was on sale though. Its excellent, and does everything I need to. I have got a desktop, and also upgraded the Ram for £10, plus have an external DVD drive (approx £27 on sale). I love mine because of its portability.Oh well...

I've got the original NC10 (XP version..Samsung brought out an NC10 Plus a few years afterwards).
Like others have said, I'd be concerned about the battery, and I've read various places that XP runs smoother than Windows 7 on netbooks on this spec.
Also, I'd upgrade the 1GB RAM if you can, I put a 2GB RAM stick in (dead easy to do, there's a flap underneath that needs unscrewed, takes seconds and only cost around £10).
I'd probably pay around £70-80 for an NC10 second hand. It's a great netbook but no way would I pay £140! I paid just a bit more than that new a few years back!!
My mum has the MSI Wind U135 (again, XP version, and I put 2GB RAM in that, nightmare to do with that unit as you have to unscrew the entire underside). It's basically more or less the same processor speed as the NC10 but a bit more energy efficient (assuming batteries are like for like). I got it from Argos Ebay for around £120 a year ago and it was immaculate.
I'd post the HUKD thread I got it from but can't find it!0 -

It was £130 with a six cell battery. Bought one for the girlfriend.
