If you don't have fresh tomatoes around and want to make gazpacho then ASDA passata is good for that too whereas tinned tomatoes just..aren't eww0

Anyone found a make of tinned tomatoes that didn't cost the earth or consist of a few chunks in a lot of red water?
I eat a lot of pasta and I'm trying to use more tomato-based sauces before my arteries clog altogether. The price varies wildly and the consistency is sometime appalling.
Anybody found a reasonably cost-effective and reliable brand?

I have found these taste a little strange....they have basil already in them which isn't suitable for all recipes or if you just want plain toms. I also get Tesco pasta but only when its 29p as it can go up to 59p or I by a case if 12 from Costco which are def on a par with napolina.hth.xx0 -
I was just going to say they have basil in them already, so ok for spag bol but not chilli! Have used them and they are fine.0

I have had a tinned of chopped toms on crumpets before. Not an issue.0 -

This being the Age of the Internet, there are loads more links out there about everything. Google 'health benefits of mediterranean diet' for a start and the first link shown is - http://www.patient.co.uk/health/Health-Benefits-of-the-Mediterranean-Diet.htm. The Patient.co.uk website features an editorial team whose members possess a veritable alphabet soup of qualifications, so it is entirely possible they might know what they're talking about.
However the link you cited takes us to an article which contains such useful information as:-
Whole grains cause disease in both humans and animals. Whole grain breads and bagels are not the healthy food as people are lead to believe
and
Fruit is not the healthy food many claim
The article is written by one Kent Rieske of Bible Life Ministries, (The website with a link to Heaven!) Which is where you will also find the proof that evolution is wrong, on why you shouldn't eat soya, as well as instructions on How to Lay a Floating Porcelain or Ceramic Tile Floor Over a Concrete Slab That Has Cracks, Contraction Joints, or Expansion Joints. (No, I don't understand the connection either.)
P.S. I know this has nothing to do with tinned tomatoes, but then it's not my fault. I didn't start it.0 -
But since we are on the subject of tinned tomatoes, can anyone answer this question.
Currently;
ASDA Italian Peeled Plum Tomatoes in Tomato Juice (400g) costs 40p, that's 10p/100g
ASDA Passata (500g) costs 38p, that's 7.6p/100g
Why is passata cheaper than tomatoes?0 -
I would imagine that passata is any old tomatoes bought in bulk, whizzed up and packed in tetrapaks/cans whereas peeled plum tomatoes have to be peeled so that costs more
