With a bit of luck and some nice sunny weather i should have a greenhouse full in a couple of months.
Until then i'm using Asda passata and B&M chopped.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,

For pasta sauces. I like using Tesco's Italian sieved Tomato Passata, at 29p for 500ml, works out a lot cheaper than a tin of tomatoes, and makes a lovely rich sauce.

And, as I say above, you can chop up whole tomatoes, but you can't put chopped tomatoes back together again if you need to use them whole on toast or in a full English breakfast. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -
Parioli Chopped Tomatoes 400G are buy one get one free at Tesco at £1.09 until 27 March. Might be worth trying them while they are on offer if you haven't before0

I find Asda Smartprice toms to be chunky red bits in water and the sauces tend to be a bit watery if I use them. Sainsburys basics are much better, but not as good as Napolina. I do however prefer the price of the Sainsburys ones so they generally find their way into my pantry!"A cat can have kittens in the oven, but that don't make them biscuits." - Mary Cooper

I was a huge fan of Sainsbury's tetrapaks of 'creamed tomatoes'. I used to buy them in preference to passata, as they were a lot cheaper. But not anymore! Own brand passata is now cheaper. If I need the chunkiness of plum tomatoes in a sauce or dish I use Napolina.0

I've found the value brands of asda, tesco and sainsbury's have become quite watery recently. I buy whole tomatoes, and in a recent can from tesco, when I drained the juice out, there was only about a third of tomatoes.
I've started using Napolina, only when on offer, I hasten to add! They are currently 50p a can in Tesco when bought individually, however, they work out more expensive at present if you buy a multipack of them, unless they have just changed them, they certainly were last week.
I was also going to suggest Lidl, but I think you said you don't have a Lidl nearby?
KTC aren't too bad at all either, I got some of them from a local international food shop 3 cans for £1, so 33p per can, however they are back up to nearly 40p a can at present.
it's always worth checking on approved foods/rosspa etc however, you have to work out if you are saving money because of the delivery fee.0 -

The 400g tins of Napolina Tomatoes are 50p each in Tesco right now, so I wouldn't bother paying more for what is effectively Tesco own brand.

Quality Save/Home Bargins sells them for 33p each, and they are brilliant. Seem to be quite packed with tomatoes, and a good amount of juice.
Although I am going to start trying passatta out...0 -
Anyone found a make of tinned tomatoes that didn't cost the earth or consist of a few chunks in a lot of red water?
I eat a lot of pasta and I'm trying to use more tomato-based sauces before my arteries clog altogether. The price varies wildly and the consistency is sometime appalling.
Anybody found a reasonably cost-effective and reliable brand?
