I also did not say that either. I said that many jobs in this sort of trade require drivers, and also that living in a rural area with little public transport restricts job opportunities if you cannot drive. You are in London or thereabouts aren't you. Falko is in a rural area of northern Ireland, I think he said. Just a bit different.

let me guess... the wanted you as self employed, own tools, van

some stupid rate like £10-12 a hour, yeah right! that covers your costs I suppose.

does any one know any agencies that pay proper contractor rates?

    like £18-25

I think it was £9 per hour but yes wanted me self employed and the rest. In my line of work you shouldn't actually need a van and tools, they have always been supplied by firms, You wouldn't expect a surgeon to buy his own scalpel or a fireman to bring his own fire engine and hose, but I'd say this is the way all these employers will go now, less cost to them I guess.
Well hold on in there, I have a GOOD feeling about this.

Well its certainly well done, If I don't get anywhere its down to me, not the CV
You applied to them or they found your CV online? If they are doing something I hope you hear from them again in 2012!

No I signed onto there books back in January, both had found the same job for me.

Sounds to me like the agency ran out of other people to contact - probably because so few people bother with them these days because they're so useless! IF they're that bad you might of been the only carpenter they had a CV for in the last 2-3 years!

May be. But is shows they do actually do something, I also got about 5 email alerts yesterday about the same job from various websites, so it shows they also actually work.

Sounds to me that they couldn't find any Carpenters wanting to work for £9 a hour, surprise surprise.

£9 a hour would be a fair rate if you was based in a workshop, fulltime contract, all equipment supplied. If this was self employed then £12-15 a hour would be fair if you had to use your own hand tools.

£9 a hour as selfemployed, wanting you to run around in your own van with your own equipment is a compleate farse, now wonder they can't fill the posistion. In this situation it would be reasonable to expect £20-25 per hour.

This is purely my opinion so don't shoot me down and say people work for less, thats their choice.

2, I am in shock, 1 has never contacted me before but 2, so they do actually work boy and girls for those in doubt, I fitted the criteria perfectly all the same, time served carpenter, only a few miles up the road, however the (must have own tools and van) killed it.

I gave my details and CV onto a few agencies, never head anything back since the initial days I went in for screenings. Your post makes me resent agencies even more for offering poor SE jobs.

Its standard now for them to push you a selfemployed posisition where you have to use the company they dicatate to process your wages, which just happens to be owned under the same holdings company as the agency that put you forward for the work to scrape yet more margin into the deal.

When ever the jobcentre say why don't I apply for this or that job, if its with a agency I just say I don't deal with agencys only employers, they say thats fine and we move on.

Some might say i'm shooting myself in the foot as it may lead onto other oppourtunities or a full time job, thats other peoples choice to try that avenue, I only wish to speak to employers who are in the business to provide a long term stable posisition.(not very common these days in the manual side of the construction industry).

I don't deal with agencies either. They're scum of the earth if you ask me.

Stop speaking proper english, say you're polish and 'experienced' (not qualified) you'll have building work in no time.
