WOW 2 agencies have contacted me.

2, I am in shock, 1 has never contacted me before but 2, so they do actually work boy and girls for those in doubt, I fitted the criteria perfectly all the same, time served carpenter, only a few miles up the road, however the (must have own tools and van) killed it.

Hey I was happy to get a phone call from them. No never put me forward as I can't drive. But it does show they are doing something

You applied to them or they found your CV online? If they are doing something I hope you hear from them again in 2012!

let me guess... the wanted you as self employed, own tools, van

some stupid rate like £10-12 a hour, yeah right! that covers your costs I suppose.

does any one know any agencies that pay proper contractor rates?

    like £18-25

I am afraid that you will hit this snag a lot more if you are looking to stay in your trade (or even start out in others). Many "manual" jobs - and I do know that a carpenter is highly skilled, so I am not putting you down - now require at least a driving licence if not their own transport. And I seem to recall you saying that you live in a rural area? So even more so.

I know you can't do much about this now, but I have been watching your other posts and if you get any money, invest in driving lessons. People these days can't afford not to be able to drive.

you can't afford to be running a van and being fully equipped on some of these so called selfemployed rates these agencies tout.

I didn't say you could and I didn't argue with you at all. I simply stated a fact - one cannot afford to be unable to drive these days, especially if you live in a ruiral area. That is quite a different matter from whether jobs or agencies are offering reasonable rates. But even if they are you are screwed if you can't drive, aren't you?
