Orange Problem

Hi Everyone,

Ive been in Canada since January and the last time i could use my phone was 21st February. Ive ruled just about everything out and it appears as if the sim card has stopped working. I have been paying my bill as usual but now have noticed a large increase in cost. Its not data as i have switched roaming off and i accept the one call that i made cost £6.60 for 4 minutes. I dont seem to be getting any joy at all from orange customer service and cant use my phone to contact them.

I dont really know where i stand, the bill is wrong and my sim card does not work and im in canada until the end of April.

Any advice would be most appreciated.

well what is the cost for?
    what shows on the billing?
  • the charges are as follows:

    £27.47 for my contract
    £6.60 for calls
    £6.21 VAT (not sure why)

They are for some reason quoting my contract as £31.07, this is not the case.

Also the calls were made from outside the EU and should be exempt from VAT.

Im just totally confused by these charges and it doesnt help that my sim card no longer works and am getting nothing.

If you have access to another phone you can call 07973100150 to get directly through to Orange customer services. (+44 as you are abroad)

It doesn't matter where the calls were made from, you're billed in the UK so you're changed VAT.

You're totally wrong. Where do you get this nonsense from?

For telecommunications services enjoyed outside the VAT area of the EU, no VAT is applicable. See Article 19 of the Value Added Tax (Place of Supply of Services) Order 1992. The OP clearly said he was in Canada, which is outside the EU.

    Well jigger me!
I get this nonsense from when I used to work for the network! It's what we were told in training (a term I now take very loosely).

Many thanks, I shall not repeat it again!!

In my experience, the networks (including Orange) adhere to this principle. Orange shows non-VAT calls on the bill with a #. It's not in their interests to charge VAT when they shouldn't as it makes their retail prices more expensive than they need to be and they don't ultimately receive the VAT anyway.
