I would not take too much notice of what o2 have said. Three leased 2g capacity for its network coverage for the whole of the UK to assist where 3g was poor. Now that 3g coverage is better, in some areas (mainly large towns) Three no longer lease 2g coverage in that area as they say their 3g coverage is good enough (and I agree).

This only means where the 3g coverage is not good enough, there is no 2g to fall back on in that area. If the cell is busy, then its busy, you will not get to make calls or surf the internet. But this is the same for every mobile provider. Have you ever had difficulties making calls when at festivals were there are a large group of people using the coverage at the same time.

I am going for the Three Sim only one plan, as its a beast of a deal and virtually unlimited data plan, including tethering. I wanted a Pay as you go but not many do tethering. I am going to get the sim, and test it at home and work. If it doesnt work, I will be sending it back, you have 7 days to anyway, or at most 30 as it is a month contract.

    I fully agree with O2

I wouldn't use 3 as it's important for me not to lose the ability to make and receive calls.

3 have been turning off 2g in lots of area's recently where they think they have full coverage ....what they think and what is actualy the case is not always the same.

Added to the fact as has already been pointed out 2g has the advantage of being slightly better indoors so if you are in a building with no 3g coverage it may be possible to get 2g ....that is however if 2g is available which will not be the case if it's turned off

It also works to 3's advantage not to have to pay for 2g usage on they're partner sites
It's not just about the money

Swings and roundabouts, I have an O2 phone and my wife has a 3 phone. There are areas where I lose signal and wife doesn't and vice versa. I wouldn't say any of the two were particularly bad. At home my wife gets 3G and I am stuck on GPRS (but connecting to WiFi sorts that out).
