    Right well asked OH it was a uniformed police officer and there were lots of police cars and officers doing door to door to everybody. I just can't understand why they would want our details etc.

    Uniformed police will want details so they can re-check at a later time if needed.

    Because your name and DoB identify you quite closely in the local area and mark you as a person they have spoken to?

    So it was the police then, obviously.

    Can you seriously imagine any scam artist going to the extent of hiring several police cars and uniforms just to get your date of birth? Seriously? I think either your OH severely misunderstood what the officer was saying, or he's pulling your leg. I'm going for option 1. :/
