Crimestoppers?

A bit confused has anyone else had this...
Crimestoppers knock at the door and start asking my OH if he's seen or heard anything as an incident happened last night my OH says no. That's fine then the guy who has flashed id at him asks him his name and date of birth and then my name and date of birth. At this point perhaps stupidly my OH gives him this information until I start asking who he is talking to and why they need this information. Then the guy says thanks for the help gives my OH a leaflet about the poor person who's been stabbed and leaves. We hadn't seen or heard anything so why would they need our details.
Should I be concerned? Was it really crimestoppers? Has anyone else had this?
thanks

Oh dear, my first thought is that it's dodgy. I know that's not what you'll want to hear. I can't understand why they'd need your DOB even if you had seen or heard something. I'd report them to the police, perhaps speak to some neighbours to see if they experienced the same thing too.0

What did the leaflet have on it? Was there a number to ring on it or anything?
Maybe take the leaflet to the local police station to check if it is legit or not?0 -
That was my first thought but we saw on the news that a lad had been stabbed so you stop stressing a little but its still bugging me. Ironically if something like this happens you are advised to report it to crimestoppers!
The leaflet has general info about the crime and the crimestoppers logo on it etc and who to call but looking at it, its exactly the same as the one on our local news website perhaps someone could have printed it off.0 -
I would check with the police/crimestoppers. I have had the police knock at my door asking me if I had witnessed a crime and they have never asked for my details. I can't see why they would need those details unless they were actually taking a statement from you.0

Maybe its dodgy, but maybe its not. Maybe they are collecting names and dates of birth so they know who they have already questionned, in case they start to overlap on areas etc :cool:0

Crimestoppers do not go out looking for witnesses, police officers do.
For peace of mind I would be inclined to pop into, or phone, the local police station to ask them whether this caller was legitimate. If not it may be useful for them to be aware that there is someone looking for witnesses and presenting themselves as something they are not. If they are legitimate at least you'll know, no harm done!0 -
yup its the officers who do door to door if plain clothed then cid but not crimestoppers:A VK :A0

Did they say crimestoppers?
If so crimestoppers do not do this - report to the police ASAP. Probably a family member trying to get info or worse, friends of the criminal trying to make sure no one saw anything.
If they said police then I wouldn't worry.Save £200 a month : [STRIKE]Oct[/STRIKE] Nov Dec Jan Feb Mar Apr0 -
Crimestoppers is a charity that collects information from the public and passes it to the relevant police area for their action - they are not operational and do not make field visits.
You need to call your local police non-emergency number and report this ASAP.:hello:0 -
