Hi,

Im HOPELESS when it comes to telephones. I have a cheap little PAYG that a boyfriend got for me about 6 or 7 years ago ! The time has finally come for me to enter the 21st century and I would like to buy a nice phone and would like some suggestions as to models. I dont really use the phone for communication much, just a few phonecalls and texts to friends and family per month. I want a phone that I can access the internet from as I dont have a PC at home due to connectivity problems. I would also like a handset a camera that takes really good pictures and something that I can download and play music on would be fantastic. Obviously the cheaper the better :O)
Any suggestions gratefully appreciated !
Thankyou :O)

I would consider picking an Android ( thats the software the phone runs on) phone as they allow you to do all the new modern tricks like wifi, internet, social networks , photos, videos etc .

Try a few touch screens see if they are for you else one with more buttons.

There are lots of android powered phones on the market not that expensive on pay as you go or cheaper monthly deals.

If you are after a simple phone with none of the new features I would go for a pay as you go Nokia phone these are well made, last years with long battery life and will probably come with a good camera.

IF you want to take the high street plunge the iphone is a great phone , try one in store, but they are expensive considering the other options, consider it as a laptop in your pocket option.

If you only want to access the internet occasionally for emails, but still want long battery life as most android phone need recharging every day. TRY a Samsung Tocco Lite for £15.90 + £10 top up. They are unlocked so can use your current simcard. Go thro TCB for £3.03 cashback, sell your credit for £6.20 to getpoundsback. I ordered a red one, but it was out of stock, so when I phoned them they offered me a silver design model for the same price.

It's not true that android phones don't last a day battery. This was a problem but has long been rectified on lots of models / software updates, on the cheaper models.

I'm not an android user myself but I have tested many over 2/3 days no problem with light usage.

The Samsung Tocco Lite has such a good battery as its not 3g nor wifi enabled if I recall.

Hi all and thanks for your replies so far.
Budget - I was thinking I would have to spend at least £100 for a decent handset. Im prepared to go higher for the right model. I dont really want to spend more than £15 or £20/month on a contract. I would be using the internet alot as, like I said, I dont have a laptop so this would be my laptop in a pocket as somebody put it. I'm assuming a contract would work out cheaper over the month than PAYG. So if anybody could advise a contract that is tailor-made for surfing the web alot with minimum texts a phonecalls that would be ideal for me. Actually, what I was thinking was I could keep my PAYG just for calls and texts ?
Incidentally, what is the difference between a SMARTPHONE and an ANDROID ? I have seen some phones advertised with Facebook and Twitter, but does that mean you can only access these websites and not the rest of the web ?
Lastly, if I have no internet connection at home at all so I would need mobile broadband wouldn't I ? (3G for example ?)
Sorry for all the Qs. Like I said I have no idea about phones !

An Android is a superphone, but for all intents it is a smartphone, if you are using a handset primarily for internet, then a larger screen is ideal, however phone, tablet or not, nothing beats a keyboard and monitor, some handsets can be docked , but these are likely to be outside of your price range.
All the popular apps etc are available for all platforms.

If Orange or T-mobile are OK, consider Orange San Francisco 2 or T-mobile Vivacity. They look different, but are in fact the same phone. Both cost about £100 on PAYG with some cashback available. I think both are available for free on contracts.

For an unlocked sim-free phone consider Acer Liquid Metal for £140:
