Need to check whats happened first really. Obviously changing codes etc may be a good general approach anyway but it could be the cards been used with a vendor that doesnt use 3D Secure, AVS, CVS etc

I think fraudsters wait a while between obtaining credit card details and using them so it's difficult to trace where they came from.

How do fraudsters get card details? I suspect more often than not it's from someone who works for a retailer, payment processors or card issuer.

I don't use SecureCode any more, but Visa's equivalent is fairly easy to get around.

At the end of last year two of my credit card providers replaced my cards. Not because they had been used fraudulently, but as a precautionary measure. They said they had received a warning from Visa that the details may have been compromised. It was a bit of a pain for me, especially at that time of year, but at least they seemed to be on the ball. Interestingly, I tend to only use big-name, established, retailers.

I've watched conference videos where it has been demonstrated that you can attach a device inside of a chip & pin machine to capture all of the card detailed and the PIN itself. Any member of staff can easily do it as they will all have access to it and the card doesn't even have to leave your hands.

People often blame themselves easily, but if you seriously have been taking the appropriate precautions there are still situations where a vendor is the one who experienced a security breach.

I had fraudulent transactions on my card - fortunately they tried to put through a transaction of £40,000, which was flagged up. The fraud dept thinks they were trying to put through a smaller amount and put on too many zeros. I asked whether I had been done over in a shop or something, and they said that the fraudsters have computer programmes that just generate numbers and they keep going until they find numbers that match up. It's horrible, but you might have been randomly targeted.

Creating a potentially valid card number is extremely easy. There' a list of card issuer prefixes here and a full card number is generated using a well known formula.

However, generating a valid card number and putting it together with the correct expiry date and three digital security code is probably a one in several thousand chance. I would expect payment processors to pick up on a large number of invalid card details going through their system.

Having said that, I note that Amazon doesn't ask for the three digit security code on the back of cards.

As chattychappy says, I'd put a lot of credit card fraud down to an inside job. And I suspect many computers out there are infected with key logging software.

Possibly a key logger on your computer, apparently for crims and spotty youth hacker types in their bedrooms at their parents' houses and east Europeans and Africans etc it's quite easy to get them on, lots of ways to invade you.

Avast do a free malware prog which is supposed to be one of the better ones. Maybe do a full scan and possibly there might be some nasties to get rid of or at least quarantine if they can't be deleted.

I stopped doing any net transactions, apart from the very occasional paypal, some years ago as it's so insecure. As insecure as leaving a box full of your financial paperwork and ID material outside your front door for anyone and everyone to pick over.
