When I go to France I want to set the phone so that it can send and receive calls and texts and work on wifi, but I want to stop it using any data. Can anyone tell me how to change the settings to achieve this please?

I'm on a sim only deal with Giffgaff so if something went wrong would my liability be limited to the credit I had bought?

You go into settings and switch data, autosync and roaming data off.

Thank you. Is it as easy as that! Once turned off will they reliably stay turned off? I remember reading something about phones changing their settings if certain apps were opened.

I can't speak for iphones as that is the model that is usually (if not always) attached with those horror stories, if you want to be 100% concrete, then you can add a character to the APN and then the handset will not be able to connect to the internet irrespective of the permissions on the apps, naturally when you return, you can remove the additional character and continue your handset usage as per usual

Just to add that Giff Gaff on request can turn off data on the sim card. This stops any possibility of any data being used apart from through wifi.

The disadvantage is the for a while before leaving and after coming back before you get the bar removed you will have no data in the UK either. This is a slight inconvenience but gave me peace of mind while away.

I didn't think that Giffgaff had any data roaming agreements anyway?
