It's a lot, and I'm sure she'll show happiness, and be greatful for a nano, but I'm guessiing it's not the kind she wants.
With the new iOS on itouches you can get messaging and such between them, so think text messages, except free. She can use it with wifi, store music on, store video on, use it as a reasonable camera too. They also can be quite educational with the vast number of apps on it. and the bonus is, for next xmas, or birthday time, if you're stuck with a present idea. Get her an iTunes gift card, she'll always use that!
If you haven't found out that she definitely wants the iTouch, then I'd suggest you at least just give her the value of the Nano. That way if she gets other birthday money, she can buy what she actually wants.
The nano cannot be compared to the iTouch, and if I'm honest if I wanted an itouch at a kids age, and got a nano, I would be nice, and polite, but I'd be disappointed, and I would probably rarely use it and ask again next time for an itouch.
Can I ask if she has a decent phone? like a smart phone, or even an iphone. It might be that her friends have, and this will allow her to contact them through text, and send things, and play games all together. Even if her friends only have itouchs, this means she can effectively text etc, but at a free cost.0 -
Actually, bad etiquette i know to double post. But this is what a nano can do:
Music, audiobooks, podcasts, photos, FM radio, Fitness Walk + Run support built in, Nike+ support built in
This is what an iTouch can do:
Apps, games, music, movies, TV shows, videos, ebooks, audiobooks, podcasts, photos, HD video recording and editing, FaceTime, iMessage, Safari web browser, email, Maps, Nike+ support built in*
I've bolded the ones your granddaughter would probably use. As you can see, almost all of them are just not on the Nano.
(Ihate doing this! I feel like i'm trying to give you a guilt trip on behalf of your granddaughter) But It's more that you need to be aware how different they are.0 -

A typical result of the over-commercialism of Christmas/Birthday or any other celebration. 'I'd be disappointed': are you for real? Why does a young girl need an iTouch. It is unnecessary, frivolous and unjustifiable.0 -
Simply because that is what young girls want. The days of a pretty sunday dress, a new dolly, a new pram, maybe a little sweetie are long gone. Yeah we're all commercialised, we're also all wanting to keep up with the joneses, and keep up with friends. Might not be right, but it's the way we're going.
Over commercialised, whatever. when it's something you actually want, and you don't get something that's close, or is second place to what you wanted, you will be disappointed.
The OP here has either not asked her granddaughter what one she wanted, as she's still trying to decide which to buy, or she has and is trying to save money, which is fine as well. But if she wants to save money, and save disappointment, just gift the cost of the nano, and put the decision on the child and her parents.
We can only guess on feelings, and young kids have disappointments at gifts. okay so only fleeting maybe, but it's a fact. Just search youtube for all the kids screaming at parents on xmas day for not getting what they want. Search also for the meek kids who you can tell are quite disappointed, but are doing a pretty decent job of accepting their lot.0 -

You're missing the point. Spoiling kids is a massive problem. It generally leads them to being selfish and thinking they have the God-given right to do whatever they want. Hence why there is zero control in schools where teachers cannot command control and 'pupils' have immunity from telling teachers to f- off, etc.
I wouldn't tolerate any child of mine screaming at me for what they want. They don't understand the concept of money and some parents cannot afford to buy such things. Sadly you'll find some parents would go into debt in order to service such desires only to find in January they're neck-high in it.0 -
