I shop in Asda all the time (feel like I am never out of that place!) and have returned many items. However I have been told in the past that Asda will happily take back their own unused items without a rcpt for exchange/credit note but for Branded goods eg Pampers etc. they will only accept a return with a receipt as it could have been bought anywhere.
I would maybe try Gumtree or something to try and sell them as a bulk lot?
I've taken unopened boxes of nappies back to ASDA before without a problem - I'd just keep trying each time you go into the store - you'll get a nice sales assistant eventually! I've also taken George clothes back without a receipt and while they won't give cash or refund your card, they'll give you a gift card to spend in the shop.
I agree that maybe taking everything back in one go made them suspicious that it might have been stolen (no offense intended at all) or perhaps it was just too much hassle for the girl on the till!
