Am I the only woman who doesn't 'get' jewellery crazes?

I do like jewellery, but I find it annoying so I generally only wear it when I go out.

Most days if I am just going to work I have earrings and my watch (and I take my watch off when I get there and put it on my computer!)

I have quite a few pendants to wear when I go out though, and some nice earrings and a ring.

My sister is well into her jewellery, she has an eternity ring that was £4,000 and a Rolex (can't remember how much that was) plus loads of other stuff.

I did start collecting trollbeads at one point but they are too expensive. I sold the few that I had on eBay and now I just have some cheap glass beads for my necklace instead.
  • I like jewellery but like in anything, I don't pay attention to crazes. Like others have said, paying loadsamoney (>10ukp in my book) for something that in itself has little/ no intrinsic value doesn't make sense or appeal to me.

I do have some expensive jewellery which I bought for specific reasons, and also because I like it. I also have some cheap jewellery that I bought in M&S, Sainsburys or wherever because it wasn't expensive and I knew I'd wear it. When I had an office job I wore the expensive stuff and the cheap stuff interchangeably. It all made me feel good.

Now I have a job where I can't wear any jewellery it sits in its case, and I have to remind myself to even put on a watch on my days off. I'm glad that I didn't fritter on all cheap stuff, because when it comes down to it I can always sell the expensive stuff for a rainy day.

But it all still makes me feel good, when I remember to wear any. :)

    My 2p...

I wasnt aware that there was a fad around jewellery:o

I tend to buy what I like and admit that there was a time when money wasnt so tight that I would have items made in the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham. Now, I have a few choice pieces that I have either been given as a present, I have had made or I have bought myself when I have been on holiday. The rest is either necklaces or earrings that I have made myself or made by my friends.

I have to agree with this, I dont understand how people go so crazy and pay so much to have something that everyone else has.

I have loads of high street type jewellery (river island, topshop, new look etc), my engagement ring (white gold & diamond), and some beautiful gold diamond rings from my gran. I obviously wear my engagement every day but the rest i mix it up day to day.

I don't get it either - I only wear a wedding ring ('cos I have to :p). However, I can't judge because I am an absolute sucker for kitchen gadgets. So shiney, so practical, so mine, so in the back of the cupboard rarely being used.

Definitely not just you, OP! I do like a pretty piece of jewellery that enhances an outfit for a special occasion, or something that (for example) my granny might have left to me (or interesting pieces connected with history in a museum or gallery).

But apart from this, it's all just tat. Sparkly landfill - for the magpies to filch ;) What defeats me is how people fall for it...! x

I'm also immune to the "charms" of Pandora etc. The charms are overpriced and I don't like most of them either. I do wear my traditional charm bracelet though almost daily.

I do wear quite a bit of jewellery, some cheap, some definitely not but it all has some significance to me (other than earrings which I lose too frequently to become attached to).

Nope, definitely not just you, OP! All my jewellery is cheap and the majority of it is from Claire's Accessories! It means I can afford to buy lots and can wear something different every day.

I only own one piece of jewellery which cost more than £30, and that is a gold and white gold ring which was my 18th birthday present. I don't see the appeal in stuff like Pandora bracelets. Plus I'd never wear it as I'd be so terrified of losing something valuable!

I thought it was just me.
I don't wear jewellery much either. I have the odd bit (3 or 4 necklaces maybe) of costume jewellery but it is mostly purchased when on offer or really cheap - no more than a few pounds - or given as a gift. I have a few pieces of "proper" jewellery too. A couple of gold chains, my wedding/engagement/eternity rings, a gold bangle which I generally wear all the time.

I don't get the "you can't have enough bags" thing either and especially the fad "must haves". Even my 15 year old daughter said she didn't understand why all her friends had to have Cath Kidston Bags - "mum they look like they are plastic"

I'm not a huge jewellery person either. My everyday jewellery is my wedding and engagement ring. Usually a watch too but the battery needs replacing - in fairness my 2 watches were quite pricey!

I have a beautiful Tiffany necklace and bracelet as well as some very posh jewellery shop items but these are special occasion pieces and they were all gifts from my husband. I also have a couple sentimental pieces like a ring of my nan's but those stay in the box.

I hate seeing people with loads of rings, necklaces etc... Just think it looks tacky!

Designer shoes and bags however are my weakness!

I would always rather have fewer really good quality items then a load of cheap tat.
