I know this post is old now but incase it helps anyone else I thought I'd post it anyway. Smaller shops are better to try now as the bigger shops tend to have recycling contracts. Also, if your looking for a moving kit with a bit more than just a free pen and a roll of tape as astrich7 says :)

Davpack do a moving kit with 30 boxes of different sizes, 5 wardrobe boxes, 170 garment bags for your clothes, 5 rolls of bubble wrap for breakable items, 25m of polythene sheet, 6 rolls of tape and a hand tape dispenser.

It might be better for moving house if it's a large house or if you have a lot of expensive or fragile.

Hello, I searched for boxes in this forum and couldn't find a mention...

We're moving three times this year and so we need boxes that are sturdy, can be collapsed and then put together again and most importantly, are cheap!

Does anyone have experience or knowledge of a really good company that doesn't charge the earth?

Looking at all the different moving packs offered by the box companies makes me laugh. A free pen and roll of tape thrown in.

Any information would be really gratefully recieved - the reason we're moving area in the first place is because we can't afford our mortgage and the whole move is going to cost so much!

One thing we have achieved for the record, is good estate agent fees. The one we are going with has agreed a set fee of £1k including a board, local paper advertisements, inclusion on Rightmove and no sale no fee and it's not an exclusive deal. So it's not all doom and gloom, there are some good deals out there.

We got proper moving boxes from Pickfords off freecycle, apparently they only collect the boxes if it's in an area they are passing so lots of people don't have them taken back and give them away.
We also found banana boxes from the supermarket were good for books and stacking - v.strong.

Try local bookshops - their boxes are a good size for house moves and are really sturdy.

Have a look in the Argos catalogue. Not too sure about the price, though.
  • A good source for packing boxes? HM fORCES areas, where personel are on the move in /out. They mostly use professional packers, so boxes are good quality. Perhaps you are in such an area or know someone who is

banana boxes from supermarket are strong but have hole that needs covering in the middle. If you're moving yourself don't overpack boxes as you'll pull your back out.
Our local cash and carry has a much better box selection than supermarket

IKEA now sell packing boxes. The range is called JÄTTENE.

We bought our boxes from http://www.helpineedboxes.co.uk. They are really good quality and have lasted several moves. In fact our removal men have complimented us on them as they are modular sizes and so designed to stack and make a flat surface on top for mattresses etc. We keep them stored flat in the garage but also have some that have been boxed up for several years with stuff in them we keep meaning to sort out but in fact move from property to property!

Whenever we've moved I've used archive boxes bought from a stationers - you get about 10/12 a pack and they're not too dear. What's great is that they're collapsible, so you can just flatten them and store them for next time, they have lids so you can easily get into them, they stack brilliantly and you can't really overload them as the size prevents it.

If you are using removal company to move and just packing yourself, ask them. We are having removal company move our furniture and they offered boxes to us for £1. Also, some smaller removal companies will offer them to you for free if you return them afterwards. The garment boxes (hanging clothes) are free.
